There are many different ways to tackle a golf course and that's certainly true of Royal Birkdale, as Ken Brown explains in the video below.

  2. Birdie chance goes begging for MacIntyrepublished at 17:20 BST

    MacIntyre -4, A Fitzpatrick E (11)

Bob MacIntyre is stalking his ball on the 11th as he sizes up 10 feet for birdie. This would be a big stride forward and get him under par for the day.

Urgh, he's missed. A good chance goes begging, and he'll stay five back.

  3. Postpublished at 17:20 BST

    Wallace -1, Kim -7 (9)

Kim Si-woo has reached the turn in two under par for the day and with no bogeys on the card.

Playing partner Matt Wallace has slipped out of contention, though, with dropped shots on three, four and five damaging his chances.

  4. Suber gives up a shotpublished at 17:17 BST

    Herbert -7, Suber -7 (6)

Jackson Suber takes a step back at the sixth, punished for an errant drive into the native area.

He left himself 31 feet for par and it just comes up short. With Sam Burns moving to nine under, Suber goes from co-leading to two back.

Terrific effort from Lucas Herbert at sneaking an unlikely birdie at the sixth after also finding the thick stuff off the tee.

His 35-footer doesn't go in, but he has salvaged par.

  5. Burns strikes the front!published at 17:16 BST

There it is! Sam Burns rolls in his birdie putt on the eighth and we have a new solo leader of the 154th Open Championship on nine under.

    Gerard -5, Young -7 (7)

Over at the par-three seventh, Cameron Young goes agonisingly close with a birdie putt up the hill.

Young gets it snake back towards the hole from 25 feet but it curls an inch wide prompting gasps from the crowd.

The American taps in for par.

  7. Par threes for Fleetwood and Rahmpublished at 17:15 BST

    Fleetwood -7, Rahm -3 (12)

Tommy Fleetwood is no stranger to the top of the leaderboard at a major championship. He's finished in the top 10 eight times during his career - but no victories yet.

Fleetwood makes a better job of his long birdie putt than Jon Rahm and while the Englishman comfortably saves par, the Spaniard has to hole from six feet for his three.

  8. Aberg makes a movepublished at 17:14 BST

    Aberg -5, Lowry -3 (13)

We've not given you much on salmon-shirted Swede Ludvig Aberg but he's quietly putting together a good round.

A birdie at the 13th takes him up to -5 for the tournament.

Playing partner Shane Lowry has also picked up a birdie to get back to level par for the round.

  9. Bryson held 'tournament hostage' - McIlroypublished at 17:12 BST

    McIlroy -2 (69)

Here's more from Rory McIlroy's quite incendiary interview about Bryson DeChambeau's two-shot penalty on Friday evening...

"I think there's no doubt that he improved the line of his backswing. Again, it's like, whether it was careless or whether it was intentional, I don't think it matters. Hopefully it was careless, but I think the two-shot penalty was justified for sure.

"I won't pretend to be up here and defend Bryson. I'm not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it's performative. I think a lot of it's for attention.

"To hold the tournament hostage like that, and to have all of us, players, volunteers, everyone waiting on him to depart, I didn't feel like it was a great look.

"I'm not in his mind. I'm not in his -- but it didn't look good."

I’d love Tommy to win but Burns and Scheffler looking right on top of their game. It’s going to be mighty close tomorrow.

  11. Bryson in botherpublished at 17:11 BST

    DeChambeau -5, Burns -8 (7)

Bryson DeChambeau perched on top of a bunker, somehow his tee shot on the eighth managed to avoid the sand trap but was stuck in some rough above it.

It's a difficult stance but he plays it away nicely enough to find the green.

Sam Burns, though is on the short stuff and he again jams one in close to give himself a putt to take the solo lead.

  12. Keeping the course playablepublished at 17:10 BST

With zero rain this week it's been a challenge for course manager Sean McLean and his staff to keep the course on the right side of playable.

He told BBC Sport: "There’s a pressure on the staff to keep things on that knife-edge, to keep it playing linksy, but at the same time, we’re keeping the plant alive and not letting it just disappear.

"You want to be in control. People wouldn’t know that it takes a lot of fine-tuning to keep things on a knife’s edge. You’re trying to push it as far as it can go.”

  13. Par for Bobpublished at 17:10 BST

    MacIntyre -4, A Fitzpatrick E (10)

The 10th hole features a big swoop to the left and Bob MacIntyre's tee shot comes up slightly short of the corner bunker.

He's coming out of the semi-rough for his approach, lands it just off the green then clips to within three feet.

    Pocket the par. Move on.

  14. Eagle alert for Neergaard-Petersenpublished at 17:08 BST

    Neergaard--Petersen -6 (17)

A brilliant eagle from Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen at the 17th gets him within two shots of the lead.

Always a delight to see someone chip in from off the green, and the Norwegian is putting together an excellent round.

Four under with one to play.

What do you think of the Bryson DeChambeau penalty then?

Rory McIlroy told BBC Sport: "I was watching the golf live in the locker room with a few other players and when he did what he did, we all looked at each other and said that didn’t look right."

But what do you think? Was it harsh, justified or not a penalty at all? Instead of a straight yes or no, we've got a couple of options so let us know what you think.

Tommy Fleetwood is the hottest ticket in town today.

And the natives are getting their money's worth.

  17. Burns joins the leadpublished at 17:03 BST

    DeChambeau -5, Burns -8 (7)

There it is! Sam Burns taps it in for his two on the seventh and he joins the leaders on eight under. He looks like a man on a mission too today.

Bryson DeChambeau was well off target with his tee shot here but managed to get down in two for his par.

  18. Fleetwood one off the leadpublished at 17:03 BST

    Fleetwood -7, Rahm -3 (11)

In goes the three-foot birdie putt from Tommy Fleetwood and you'd think he'd holed from 60 feet given the size of the roar.

A smile and a tip of the cap to the crowd from Fleetwood.

    He couldn't, could he?

Jon Rahm, meanwhile, splashes out of the bunker to within six inches of the cup. Outstanding.

  19. Birdie chances go beggingpublished at 17:02 BST

    Gerard -5, Young -7 (6)

Wind is buffeting the flag at the sixth but Ryan Gerard's approach shot is on point as he lands it within 10 feet for a birdie putt.

The American comes up just short, though, and ends up tapping in for a par.

Gerard's compatriot Cameron Young has a birdie hope from around 30 feet but he too has to settle for par.

    DeChambeau -5, Burns -7 (6)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live

A clumsy putt from Bryson DeChambeau.

It's really interesting watching these two players play this. Bryson's comes in low and hard and rolls on to 30 feet. Sam Burns comes in so high, so soft. It lands in the same spot, takes one bounce and checks up next to the hole.

It shows where Bryson is struggling this season with his wedge play and he's got a lot of work left for his par.
