George Russell beat Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli to pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix with the very last lap of the qualifying session.

Russell, who won the sprint race earlier on Saturday, was on the back foot after aborting his first lap.

But a final run on which he did two flying laps enabled him to pip Antonelli by 0.068 seconds and Russell whooped with delight on the radio after realising he had secured pole.

"It is the most exhilarating feeling in the world when it comes at the last minute out of nowhere," he said over the radio.

Antonelli had looked set to beat his team-mate when he eclipsed the time set by McLaren's Lando Norris on the Briton's first run, with Russell's first lap on his final run good enough only for third.

But Russell had planned for two laps and he did the business on his second one.

He said: "There are times when you expect to be on pole and every lap is the quickest, but the times when it comes together at the end are the sweetest."

That's all from us today, thank you for joining us.

We will be back at 20:00 BST for race build up.

The Mercedes duo of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli make up the front row for tomorrow's race.

McLaren's Lando Norris sits behind them and will want to make quick work of the pair for the front spot.

Will it be sunny or will the rain pour? Will someone collide with the wall of champions? Will it be chaos heading into Turn One?

    We will find out tomorrow.

Lights out for the Canadian Grand Prix at 21:00 BST.

    See you then!

  3. Can Russell do the double in Canada?published at 22:41 BST

George Russell won the sprint race in Canada earlier today and he put his Mercedes in pole position for the race on Sunday.

The 28-year-old has often spoken about favouring Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and won the race in 2025, ahead of Max Verstappen's Red Bull.

He had a great start to the season, winning the opener in Australia but fell short after his team-mate Kimi Antonelli won three races back-to-back.

He said he is looking forward to getting his "groove back" in Montreal.

  4. McLaren make 'progress'published at 22:39 BST

McLaren boss Andrea Stella speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it's been an encouraging day, results was good and we picked up some points. The fact that we could keep up with Mercedes was positive. Mercedes is the fastest car, we were a little bit closer. The area we perform well is in the corners, but we lose some in the straights. Overall, I think it's progress."

On keeping up with Mercedes: "It's encouraging, we also added upgrades, there's a little bit more to add in the upcoming races and a few items that we will review. The trend is very encouraging. Tomorrow there will be some weather, anything can happen."

  5. 'I don't think we have the ultimate pace' - Piastripublished at 22:35 BST

Oscar Piastri speaking to Sky Sports: "We are a bit closer to Mercedes but I don't think we have the ultimate pace that they have, it was impressive. We got close but not quite enough to do more than that."

On the weather: "We'll wait and see about the weather, that will probably be the biggest opportunity. We'll see what we get and go for that."

  6. Top 5 deja vu?published at 22:32 BST

No deja vu here, we have seen this top five line up before, yesterday to be exact.

It is the same top five in both sprint qualifying, yesterday and main race qualifying this year.

George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton.

It might be even weirder if they end up finishing the race in the same position they finished the sprint.

  7. Race day weatherpublished at 22:30 BST

On Sunday, the weather forecast has a risk of rain at 100% for lights out at 4pm local time. The temperature also drops to about 12C.

  8. Could rain bring 'beautiful chaos'?published at 22:28 BST

    Marc Priestley
Former F1 mechanic on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Some 'beautiful chaos' is what I'm really up for [in tomorrow's race]. It was interesting hearing George say they made some changes to the car with the possibility of rain in mind.

They had so much of a pace advantage, probably about three tenths over everybody else, maybe because they had that advantage, they were able to make some comprises today that might put them in a better position for tomorrow, if it is indeed wet.

  9. McLaren 'in a good place' - Norrispublished at 22:25 BST

    Lando NorrisImage source, Getty Images

McLaren's Lando Norris, who will start third on the grid: "I feel like we did a good job out there today. It's a difficult track to out everything together perfectly. But I think we did another good job.

"I think it's clear these guys are just that little bit quicker. It's nice to be closer than we were yesterday. I had fun [in the sprint] but the weather is going to be different tomorrow, so we'll wait and see.

"We're in a good place and the place we need to be."

  10. 'It's been difficult this weekend' - Antonellipublished at 22:22 BST

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli after finishing P2: "I mean it's always a bit hard to commit for lap one. It's been very difficult this weekend, with the tyres and putting them in the right window. I was quite happy, I think there was a bit left on the table but George did a great lap at the end."

On the weather: "We'll see what the weather is going to be like but we'll try to be ready for everything"

  11. Russell and Antonelli 'respect one another'published at 22:20 BST

More from polesitter George Russell, who is asked if "the gloves will be off" with Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli following their scrap in the sprint race, or have the two been told something different: "We've had a good chat since this morning. We're both racing drivers, we both respect one another.

"We'll go racing and I think, you know, we're just battling the tow of us, but we'll see how competitive everyone else is tomorrow. We're aware that's going to be a whole new challenge as well."

  12. Pole lap was 'epic'- Russellpublished at 22:19 BST

    George RussellImage source, Getty Images

Mercedes' George Russell, who will start on pole position: "It's always challenging coming back after the sprint race; the car feels very different in the qualifying format.

"We made some changes as a team - we need to review after if that was the right direction. But obviously that last lap sort of came from nowhere. It's such a great feeling when it's a challenging session and you pull it all together for the last lap. It was epic.

On the problems with the rear of the car: "We made some changes based on the forecast tomorrow and it may have hurt us a little bit for now. It took the car out of sync a little bit.

"Kimi [Antonelli] was definitely more competive than I was in that session, but we weren’t as clear ahead as everybody else like yesterday. So it was definitely a challenge.

"But as I said, just managed to redial in for that last lap and put it together."

He won the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, can he make it two in a row?

Russell and Kimi Antonelli make up the front row for Sunday's race.

With the tension from the sprint race earlier between the two, it will be incredibly interesting to see how it all pans out heading into Turn One tomorrow.

Wow! What a session from start to finish. That was nail-biting. George Russell absolutely delivering.

The pressure was on to such a large extent, he just didn't get it right all the way through that session - until it absolutely mattered!

In that moment, he did not put a foot wrong.
