The first corner is causing headaches for a few drivers and world champion Lando Norris and the Audi of Nico Hulkenberg are latest cars to lock-up. Norris had his flying lap scuppered following that incident with Alex Albon, so the McLaren man has to settle for P7 as the session comes to a close.

Oscar Piastri slips to fourth on the timesheets, as Lewis Hamilton swipes his place to move into the top three.

Lando Norris and Alex Albon almost get in each other's way as they grapple for position, with the world champion having to run wide to avoid the slow-moving Williams on the racing line at the end of the straight.

Kimi Antonelli's session in over. The Italian teenager is out of the car and watching the rest of the action from Mercedes garage.

Max Verstappen goes quickest on his first flyer on the softs for Red Bull, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri putting his car third on the board with a 1:29.961.

But it's Charles Leclerc who has the advantage in this first practice session and the Monegasque driver is the man to beat once again. He puts down a 1:29.443 andgoes top, 0.333 seconds ahead of Verstappen and half a second faster than Piastri.

  6. Russell going for lappublished at 18:20 BST

George Russell is flying under the watchful eye of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who loves wearing his headphones like a hairband.

The Briton can't quite trouble the top of the timesheets with his opening attempt, though, and slots in to third on the timesheets.

Oscar Piastri is back in the garage and tells his crew he has smoke in the the cockpit, adding it could maybe be the brakes? For Williams, Spaniard Carlos Sainz joins George Russell and informs his pit wall the team's Mercedes engine is also being hit with turbo troubles.

The top 11 drivers have all headed back to the pit lane. Are we about to witness more cars bolt on the soft tyre for some rapid laps? Let's hope so. The clock is ticking and there are 17 minutes left of this extended first - and only - practice session.

Brit rookie Arvid Lindblad (below), who has four championship points to his name, contacts his Racing Bulls pit wall to say there is something weird going on with his brakes, so probably best to take a quick look.

Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas has joined the Aston Martin duo on the soft compound and will be hoping to improve on his P20 marker of 1:33.617.

Charles Leclerc is quickest overall with Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton just behind in second and third.

The Red Bull phone is red hot with calls from Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.

Dutchman Verstappen is first to flag familiar issues with downshifting then Frenchman Hadjar adds his opinion, with some extra spice. "Come on man, these ******* downshifts!" he cries.

Verstappen is P5 on the board while Hadjar is down in 10th.

Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso are down at the bottom of the timesheets after earlier troubles but now the two drivers have been put on the soft tyre with 39 minutes of the session remaining.

Canadian Stroll, who is hoping the changes brought in for Miami onwards can help bring the fun back to Formula 1, is 19th on the board with Spanish two-time world champion Alonso in 18th place.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, is unhappy with the weaving from the car in front of him and decides to vent to his pit wall about it.

I think it's a really interesting dynamic at Mercedes. Antonelli has really stepped it up this year but he's also been quite lucky. Russell had a technical problem in China qualifying and then had another one in Japan, and Antonelli got lucky with the safety car in the grand prix. It's only three races with 19 to go. We're going to see the mettle of both of them and Russell has been in Formula 1 a lot longer than Antonelli but at the same time you could see why they both feel pressure.

  15. Leclerc goes quickestpublished at 17:48 BST

The rear of Lando Norris' car is slipping and sliding as the reigning world champion sets off on another lap around the Miami circuit.

With other cars improving around him, Norris now finds himself fourth on the timesheets and 0.355 seconds off the leading driver, which is the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

The Monegasque man has clocked a 1:29.855 on his latest hard-tyre run, with teenager Kimi Antonelli more than two tenths behind in P2 and Leclerc's Scuderia team-mate Lewis Hamilton third fastest.

I don't think the pecking order is going to change that much. It's great to see Antonelli up there. There are question marks over his ability to sustain the momentum he had going into this break. It's really interesting to see how he's come out here.

  17. Norris goes P2published at 17:42 BST

McLaren were on the podium in Japan thanks to Oscar Piastri's second place at Suzuka and the team are heavily upgraded for the return in Miami this weekend as they look to close the gap on leaders Mercedes.

Lando Norris is the quicker of the two papaya cars so far and cuts Kimi Antonelli's pace advantage down to 0.129 seconds on his latest run on the hard compound.

"Lando has been on it from the moment go," McLaren CEO Zak Brown tells Sky Sports from the pit wall.

Eleven parts have been upgraded on the Ferrari, which is the most of anyone. The least of anyone is Aston Martin who have no upgrades while Haas have one upgrade.

George Russell is down in eighth place on the timesheets and the Briton runs wide at Turn One on his latest lap. Russell has been pegged as the title favourite this season but for now, he's having to battle his younger team-mate for the best seat in the championship house.

Another tour of Miami complete and Russell moves to sixth on the board, nearly a second adrift of Kimi Antonelli.
