Leclerc just doesn't look like he's gelling with the car as well as Hamilton. When we see Hamilton on track he just looks alive with the car - he looks like he's having fun with it.

  4. Verstappen goes P9published at 22:17 BST

Max Verstappen was late out in the Red Bull and after a second go at a lap time, his effort only places him ninth on the timesheets.

Lewis Hamilton jumps up to second, as the two Audis, both Haas driver and Franco Colapinto are in danger.

Oscar Piastri's opening attempt puts him above McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in fourth, with the Australian just under four tenths off the pace of George Russell.

Charles Leclerc has had a quiet Friday so far and the Monegasque driver is sixth on the timesheets in SQ2.

Max Verstappen, meanwhile, has just had a lap deleted for exceeding track limits.

George Russell goes quickest from Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli but Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad can do better.

World champion Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton in the 1:13s are near the top but after another flyer around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Russell fastest again with a 1:13.466.

Lance Stroll was the only driver in the bottom four that got a lap in but in the end the home driver was unable to save himself from the chop.

That has been timed so badly by the majority of the field, who did not make it.

Fernando Alonso has made his way to the media pen already following his shunt into the barrier - he's wasting no time today.

"There is no room to avoid anything here in Canada.

    "Too much on the limit."

That's a shame for Fernando Alonso. He was probably outdriving that Aston Martin, I would say, when you look at his team-mate Lance Stroll down in 18th.

There could've been a real possibility of getting through to SQ2, which would've been mightily impressive.

  16. Pit exit closedpublished at 21:49 BST

The barrier needs a bit more TLC after Fernando Alonso crash, so drivers are waiting patiently to be released, as more marshals arrive on the scene to get the job done.

  17. Pit exit closedpublished at 21:47 BST

The clock is frozen at one minute and 46 seconds, so how many drivers are going to be able to get a lap in? And also get the tyres up to temperature?

Just above the snake pit is Haas' Oliver Bearman, Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi and Bearman's team-mate Esteban Ocon.

  18. red flag

Fernando Alonso is on the team radio to Aston Martin. "Sorry, lock up," says the Spaniard. He safely exits the car and is making his way back to the garage. Alonso is currently in P14.

Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly and Valtteri Bottas are the drivers in trouble

  19. red flag

Red flag - Alonso crashespublished at 21:42 BST

The red flag is doing overtime today. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso suffers a big lock-up in the opening part of the lap and he goes straight on and smack into the wall at Turn three.
