  1. CLOSE!published at 15:55 BST

    Manchester United 2-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are looking for some inspiration and they almost get it from Cody Gakpo. He is on the edge of the 'D' and curls it right footed at goal. Senne Lammens is worried and flings himself across goal, but the ball just goes wide of the far post.

Liverpool are trying to slow this game down because Manchester United came out the blocks firing. They've got their goals because of the pace and the energy of their game. Liverpool are trying to slow it down.

    On the Konate-Sesko incident

The two big players got to the ball at the same time. Konate gives Sesko a little nudge and helps him down the bank. Any defender would've done the same.

Goalscorer Benjamin Sesko is lucky to not get an injury when he looks to have been given a nudge by Ibrahima Konate, with the striker sliding off the side of the pitch and into an advertising hoarding.

Konate lucky to not get a yellow too for that one.

I believe the referee got that right. I think the power from Woodman gives it the momentum to go over the white line. Ugly goal, who cares?

We know what Bruno is like, it is an unbelievable cross. Two great bits of play for Bruno. United are in dreamland!

  5. A long way back for Liverpoolpublished at 21 mins

Liverpool are all over the place. The defending is woeful. Yes, they've got their struggles with injuries but this is a side that is struggling to do the basics here.

No wonder then that Arne Slot dropped to the floor when the ball went in for the second goal. It's a long way back from here for the visitors.

  6. 'Glad VAR kept out of it'published at 20 mins

That was one of those infuriating ones where it seemed the VAR was looking for a reason to disallow the goal.

Benjamin Sesko didn't control the ball with his hand - or even attempt to - it would have been the slightest flick from a deflection after Freddie Woodman saved.

I am glad VAR kept out of it in the end.

The goal stands and Manchester United are 2-0 up inside 17 minutes. The VAR, Stuart Attwell, judged that the ball had not come off the hand of Benjamin Sesko.

Liverpool all over the place and two down.

We have a check for a potential handball from Benjamin Sesko. To VAR we go. Goal or not?

    Benjamin Sesko

The ball is in the net again for Manchester United, with the ball bouncing off the body of Benjamin Sesko after Freddie Woodman had pushed Bruno Fernandes' header on to the striker.

Will it count though? A potential handball is being checked.

Really poor headed clearance, not closing the ball down then turning your back on the ball. These are basic things going wrong defensively for Liverpool.

    Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool

Michael Carrick made a big call bringing Matheus Cunha straight back - and is rewarded with a goal after six minutes.

The atmosphere in here is electric.

I am pretty sure the home fans will soon be singing Carrick's name.

His claim on the manager's job on a full-time basis is strengthening.

Only Bournemouth (19) have conceded more goals from set pieces (excluding penalties) in the Premier League this season than Liverpool (17).

Meanwhile, only Arsenal (17) and Tottenham (15) have more Premier League goals from corners this season than Manchester United (13).

  13. United make the pressure countpublished at 10 mins

    Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool

Manchester United have had the better start and they've made the early pressure count. Liverpool fail to clear their lines from a corner and they're a tad unlucky with the deflection but Michael Carrick's side are deservedly ahead.

A chance for a quick equaliser, but Cody Gakpo makes a real mess of a header, sending it well wide from six yards out, although he would have then been offside anyway.

  15. goal

GOAL - Manchester United 1-0 Liverpoolpublished at 6 mins

    Matheus Cunha

The hosts take the lead after only six minutes. Bryan Mbeumo takes a corner from the right but it is headed away at the near post, but there's not enough distance on the header.

It drops to Matheus Cunha on the edge of the box and he shoots hard and low, it takes a nick off Ryan Gravenberch and drops into the net. What a start for the home side.

It's a shame that Liverpool aren't at full strength. These games at Old Trafford can be incredible. But today, I'm expecting a pretty comfortable win for United which should never be the case for such a fantastic match-up.

Listen to the noise and the cheers.

The fans are appreciating the energy that both sides have put in these first coupe of minutes. Bruno Fernandes down the right hand side putting a few crosses in.

    Manchester United 0-0 Liverpool

A nervous start for Liverpool keeper Freddie Woodman as his clearance can only find Bryan Mbeumo, although Liverpool have enough bodies back.

Mbeumo then gets the ball again on the right but can only float a ball into the middle over the head of Benjamin Sesko and away harmlessly for a goal kick.

  19. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Liverpool

Bruno Fernandes needs one assist to equal the Premier League record of 20, set by Thierry Henry and then equalled by Kevin de Bruyne.

Fernandes is heavily involved early on down the right wing, but the first dangerous cross into the middle is cut out by Virgil van Dijk, before Benjamin Sesko is flagged offside from the second one.

This is Freddie Woodman's first away Premier League start since September 2021, when he appeared for Newcastle against Manchester United in a 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford.
