Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris on tonight's win: "It's really positive. We are on this demanding journey and it's a new challenge for the club, for the players and I think the energy is getting better.

"We know that we have good players but this this journey is really challenging so they have to to embrace the challenge and they showed this evening that they are ready for that."

When asked about qualifying for the quarter final despite other priorities: "I think winning is important. It feeds the feeling of the dynamic and it helps for everything.

"When you win, I think you've got better energy to recover properly and it feeds the good vibes."

He doesn't have his strongest front three and that is his biggest problem. When you have Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro, a fantastic front three.

For me when all three are fit and firing as a three they are probably the best in the Premier League. A lot of people will debate that, but when they don't have that, do they have enough options that can come in? And I don't think they have enough options that can come in and fill in.

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a level game. Not a lot of chances for both teams. We are really happy with the performances of the players.

On youngsters playing: "They were very good against Spurs in the first round and they are very good players. We are confident and they have shown they are at a very good level. They helped us.

"You have to keep the concentration levels and the control. Giorgi [Mamardashvili] has improved at stopping a lot of the shots.

"Three at home in a row is very important. We were struggling at home in the league but now we go against Arsenal on Sunday."

Chelsea

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, speaking to Sky Sports: "Every time you reach the penalties, someone will feel it is harsh to go out of the competition. It was really close from both sides. Penalties mean it is open to anything.

"They have performed at a good enough level to compete at Anfield. We conceded the penalty and it was even. The game was really close for both sides.

"It has been a solid performance from Mike [Penders]. We didn't concede many chances but he was quite stable and solid with his performances. That was really important in the first half for us.

"This is football. It is part of our job. We were showing a good level and this is what it takes to come to these stadiums. The Premier League is the main focus.

"We don't have much time to recover because the game is Saturday, early kick-off so we need to change the mindset quite quickly.

I think it's one Xabi Alonso has to answer very soon [on why Estevao hasn't played] because you can talk about injuries and suspensions to forward players and again, in a game like today he is a difference maker.

He's the last person you want to see come on that pitch tonight if you are a Liverpool defender. Him getting on the ball, running at you, making things happen. I just feel that there's something there at the moment that is stopping him getting the game time that we are all sitting here thinking he should be getting.

"It was an even game and at times we had the better of it. I had half chances that I'd have liked to have put away.

Absolutely brilliant drama at the end. A combination of some really good penalties and some not so good penalties. The keepers pulling off saves as well, but again, the game was played in a really good spirit.
