Quansah and Anderson - when was the last time an England World Cup starting 11 had 2 ex-Bristol Rovers players?

    Vincent, Bali

Not 100%, but I am pretty certain this is the first time we have had a message from someone in Bali asking about ex-Bristol Rovers players.

As England try to get their game right on the pitch, the games they play off the field are performing a key role in team bonding.

While the focus during the World Cup group stage has been all about Croatia, Ghana and Panama, the players' downtime has been spent on Wolf, SkyJo and Imposter.

England's players are getting into their leisure time games to strengthen team bonding - which could be crucial if they are to go far at this tournament.

The squad are two weeks into their stay at their World Cup basecamp in Kansas City. They could be there for another three weeks if they reach the final - which is why keeping themselves entertained away from the training pitch is so important.

At previous tournaments, the players have played Wolf, a game similar to the BBC show The Traitors.

When they played it during their downtime in the build-up to the Euro 2024 final against Spain, the squad received a message from Traitors presenter Claudia Winkleman.

Wolf is on England's games menu during this World Cup too - but SkyJo and Imposter are new additions to ensure the players are entertained when not on the training pitch under the watchful eye of Thomas Tuchel and his staff.

  6. Anderson's journey to England star and potential record signingpublished at 14:54 BST

Panama v England (Sat, 22:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Elliot Anderson was the schoolboy footballer so good his teachers discussed placing a bet on him playing for England.

The bet was never made - but Thomas Tuchel is backing him to be a winner at the World Cup and Manchester City are doing the same after agreeing a club record £116m to sign him from Nottingham Forest.

Anderson's journey from the playing fields of Tyneside to the World Cup stage will continue at Etihad Stadium after transfer talks were finally successfully concluded between Forest and City.

The midfielder is the one that painfully got away from Newcastle United but is still revered and respected in his home city as the "quiet and self-effacing" local boy made good.

Spain are third on 13.1%, while England are on 8.73%. Elsewhere:

The last time they wore the away strip at a World Cup or Euros was in the third place game against Belgium at the 2018 World Cup, which England lost 2-0.

Kane heads England into 2-1 lead against Croatia

If Harry Kane keeps on scoring then England can bring home the World Cup - that is the prediction of former coach Dave Bricknell, who worked with the Three Lions captain more than 20 years ago, during his time at junior side Ridgeway Rovers in his home town of Chingford.

"I think we've got a good chance," Bricknell told BBC News. "I mean France look really good, Spain will be good and Morocco don't look too bad as well, but I think we've got a good chance and in a one-off game I think we can beat anyone.

"You know, we've got the players. Harry can score the goals so I think we've got a really good chance of winning it."

Bricknell said that the way Kane struck the ball, the confidence he had in his own ability and his resilience - the way he kept going even when he missed a shot - is what set him apart as a junior.

"He doesn't mind scoring long shots, tap-ins and he's a leader now," added Bricknell.

"It makes you laugh because I watch it [the World Cup] with my family and my son, who played in the same team as him [Kane], and I joke that he should have been him, but that's another story.

"But yeah, he's made us all proud. It's lovely seeing kids that you've coached in the past go on and do really good things."

And his message to Kane?: "Do your best son. Be proud of yourself. You've made your family proud. You've made the whole of Chingford proud...now bring it on home."

A lot being made about Panama not losing badly so far, but England beat Croatia comfortably and dominated Ghana who set out to frustrate. England are far better than Croatia and Ghana so we should be confident that we'll beat Panama more comfortably than they did.

Ghana will win this. I thought they were excellent against England and unlucky not to get more than a point. They should have been awarded a penalty in the second half and, separately, Jordan Pickford was lucky to avoid a red card too.

They looked really well organised under Carlos Queiroz and I can see them getting the better of this ageing Croatia team, which looks old and tired - a little bit like Alistair and myself at the moment.

  13. Group L - permutationspublished at 14:37 BST

England are sure of going through at least in third.

The Three Lions top the group ahead of Ghana on goal difference and face Panama in their final game on Saturday (20:00 BST).

Thomas Tuchel's men must equal or better Ghana's result against Croatia to remain at the summit and play a third-placed team.

If both games are draws, England win the group.

If both win, top spot would be decided on goal difference - England are currently on +2 and Ghana +1, but the Three Lions have scored three more goals.

Should goal difference finish identical, it will go to disciplinary record (England -1, Ghana -2) and then England would secure it on Fifa world ranking.

Ghana have already qualified and will secure a top-two finish if they win or draw against Croatia.

The Africans will top the group if they better England's result, or win by a big enough margin to overtake them on goal difference.

Ghana will finish third if they lose, but have enough points.

Croatia must beat Ghana if they are to secure automatic qualification. A Croatia win and England dropping points would see them top the group.

A draw would secure safe passage in third. But they won't qualify with a defeat.

Panama, who are yet to open their account, are already eliminated.

Group L - England top on 4 pts, above Ghana on goal difference, followed by Croatia on 3 pts and Panama on 0 pts

Back to Group L now, with both games taking place at 22:00 BST.

England and Ghana are both guaranteed a place in the knockout stages, but the exact make up of the table is yet to be determined and could yet change drastically this evening.

  15. Europe lead the way, followed by magnificent seven from Africa - last 32published at 14:32 BST

Four more spaces of the 32 available are up for grabs in the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup, with three groups still to be completed.

Either Austria or Algeria will take the final automatic place available in Group J, while there are three more spaces left for countries hoping to secure a slot as one of the best third-placed teams.

Of the qualifiers so far, 11 are from Europe, seven are from Africa, five are from South America, three from North and Central America, and one from Asia, while Australia complete the 28.

Here is a full list of those through so far:

    • Group A: Mexico, South Africa
    • Group B: Switzerland, Canada
    • Group C: Brazil, Morocco
    • Group D: United States, Australia
    • Group E: Germany, Ivory Coast
    • Group F: Netherlands, Japan
    • Group G: Belgium, Egypt
    • Group H: Spain, Cape Verde
    • Group I: France, Norway
    • Group J: Argentina
    • Group K: Colombia, Portugal
    • Group L: England, Ghana
    • Third place: Sweden, Ecuador, Bosnia-Herzegovinia, Paraguay, Senegal

Jordan v Argentina (Sun, 03:00 BST)

Kylian Mbappe wasn't rested for France against Norway on Friday, but fellow Golden Boot hopeful Erling Haaland was.

You get the feeling that Lionel Messi will not want to be left out against Jordan, but that tactic seems to be a factor for managers at the 2026 World Cup.

With Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez also at his disposal, Lionel Scaloni has options to replace his talisman.

  18. 'Messi or no Messi, Jordan won't be able to live with Argentina'published at 14:25 BST

Jordan v Argentina (Sun, 03:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
    Former England forward

    Jordan v Argentina flag graphic

Argentina will make changes after wrapping up the group, and I think one of them will be to leave out Lionel Messi.

Resting him now will help their chances of winning this tournament but not his hopes of winning the Golden Boot or adding to his tally as the World Cup's all-time leading scorer.

His fans won't be happy but you've got to wrap him in cotton wool. And, Messi or no Messi, Jordan just won't be able to live with them in terms of goals.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-3

    AI's prediction: 0-3

  19. Group J - permutationspublished at 14:22 BST

Argentina have topped the group and will face Cape Verde.

Austria and Algeria are tied on three points and they meet on Sunday (00.00 BST).

Austria have the goal difference advantage but likely need draw to progress regardless, as three points and a minus goal difference is unlikely to be enough to go through.

Algeria, however, must win if they to go through automatically.

A will also be enough to send Algeria through in third on four points, and they will know if that is the case as this is the final group to complete.

    The runners-up play Spain next.

    Jordan cannot progress.

Group J - Argentina top on 6pts, followed by Austria and Algeria, both on 3 pts, and Jordan on 0 pts
