Millwall cruised to a comfortable win over Queens Park Rangers in a London derby to maintain their push for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The hosts led inside three minutes, with Derek Mazou-Sacko and Camiel Neghli scoring in a totally dominant first half.

QPR boss Julien Stephan made four changes at the break and his side improved in the second half, but they failed to seriously trouble goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Alex Neil's side made their intent clear right from kick-off and, by the time Mazou-Sacko stroked home his first goal for the Lions, QPR had barely had a kick.

Mazou-Sacko was the quickest to react to a loose ball on the edge of the area and placed his left-footed shot clinically beyond the dive of keeper Joe Walsh.

QPR's defence was being ripped apart, and when Neghli cut back to wrong-foot Jonathan Varane and curled into the corner, Millwall were well worthy of their two-goal lead and in total control after just 17 minutes.

Walsh made a great save to deny Josh Coburn a goal that would have put the result beyond doubt from close range in the second half.

Substitute Nicolas Madsen finally tested Patterson with QPR's first shot on target, in the 89th minute, as Millwall celebrated another big three points in their quest to join Coventry City in achieving promotion to the top flight.

The win moves them up to second place, with promotion rivals Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough facing off on Sunday.

Millwall couldn't have wished for an easier afternoon in the sunshine in south-east London.

Neil's team were superb right from the first whistle but they came up against a QPR side who looked like they hadn't yet woken up.

If there were any nerves in the stands at The Den, they were calmed after just 150 seconds of play as Mazou-Sacko gave the hosts the lead.

By the time the half-time whistle blew, the Lions could have been out of sight - with Tristan Crama sending a free header over and Neghli sending his chip over the bar when clean through on goal with only Walsh to beat.

Neghli's chance came from a simple long ball from Patterson, knocked down by Coburn with Jake Clarke-Salter failing to deal with the danger - it was far too easy for Millwall and that was reflected in Stephan's quadruple substitution at half-time.

For Millwall, this was the perfect confidence boost leading into their favourable run-in, which includes games against relegation strugglers Leicester City and Oxford United.

'We could have scored more' - reaction

Alex Neil says he thinks Millwall should have scored more goals against QPR

Millwall boss Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"We made a fast start. We needed to get the fans behind us, we needed to play on the front foot, try and create chances and pressure.

"To score so early and to back that up with a few chances and another goal set us up really nicely for the remainder of the game. Delighted with the lads' performance."

QPR boss Julien Stephan told BBC Radio London:

"We knew before the game that we needed to impact immediately the game in terms of intensity, to win second balls.

"And unfortunately, it was not the case, and was probably a big limit. We showed some big limits in the first half. This is the reality of this game.

"We need to learn from that. It's really important for the future."
