Burnley end losing streak with draw against Villa
At a glance
Villa come from behind to lead 2-1 - but pegged back for Burnley draw
Emery's side four points above Bournemouth with two games to go
Burnley celebrate their first point since February
Aston Villa's Champions League qualification remains far from certain after being held by already relegated Burnley.
The Europa League finalists remain fifth in the table but could still be caught by Bournemouth or Brighton with two games to go.
Villa were miles off their best and trailed when Jaidon Anthony pounced to score a rebound after Emiliano Martinez parried Lesley Ugochukwu's 20-yard effort.
Ollie Watkins had a goal disallowed for offside before Ross Barkley nodded in from John McGinn's corner.
Villa thought they were heading to three points when Watkins latched on to Martinez's long ball before finding the net.
But Zian Flemming finished off a good team move to earn Burnley's first point in almost two months.
Villa called for a penalty late on when Kyle Walker stood on the back of Emiliano Buendia's foot - but it was not given after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
Villa's league woes continue
Emery "very happy" with "fantastic" Aston Villa performance
Over the past nine games Villa's league form (eight points) would see them in the relegation zone - a run that has put their Champions League position into some doubt.
They were highly impressive in Thursday's 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Europa League semi-final second leg, which set up an Istanbul final with Freiburg.
Win that and Villa would be in the Champions League anyway - but they will want to do it through the Premier League.
Boss Unai Emery only made three changes from that win over Forest, but Villa did not come near to replicating that performance.
They missed several chances but also rode their luck to not go 2-0 behind.
Watkins thought he had made it 1-1 with a header into an empty net from Morgan Rogers' cross, but it was ruled out by the VAR for offside.
Barkley did level with a fine glancing header across the goal from a McGinn corner.
And when Watkins controlled Martinez's long ball on his shoulder before getting past two defenders and beating the onrushing Max Weiss, it felt like they should have been able to see it out.
But Matty Cash lost possession on the right and was made to pay by the Clarets.
Villa must now hope Bournemouth and Brighton both drop points - or else they will have to get something from games against Liverpool and Manchester City to seal that top-five spot.
Positive signs from Burnley
The character showed was pleasing - Jackson
Burnley already know they will be in the Championship next season, with Mike Jackson now in caretaker charge after the exit of Scott Parker.
They had lost their past five games - and only won once since October.
So getting a point, including fighting back, against the team fifth in the table gave their fans something to cheer about.
They fully matched Villa and had 15 shots, six on target.
And they will have felt they deserved their opener, their earliest league goal this season, when Anthony took advantage of some debatable Martinez goalkeeping to net in the eighth minute. Flemming should have doubled their lead following a good cross from Loum Tchaouna.
Young German keeper Weiss, handed a Premier League debut with Martin Dubravka on the bench, pulled off some good saves.
And Jackson's side showed spirit to come back after going 2-1 behind with Ugochukwu passing to Hannibal Mejbri, who flicked the ball on for Flemming to net his 10th league goal of the season.
What's next for these teams?
Aston Villa host Liverpool on Friday (20:00 BST), then face Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday, 20 May (20:00) before finishing the season at Manchester City on Sunday, 24 May (16:00).
Burnley have two games left before their return to the Championship - at Arsenal on Monday, 18 May (20:00) and at home to fellow relegated side Wolves on the final day.
