What a thriller that was. A game played in four seasons, but it is City who secure the first trophy of the campaign.

Recovering from last week's first domestic defeat of the season to Rangers, they gain revenge by wrestling the Sky Sports Cup from the holders for the last three seasons.

City's first League Cup triumph in 11 years means they equal Hibs' record of winning it seven times.

Leanne Ross has told her players to go enjoy their evening of celebrations.

But the celebrations will be short-lived as the City head coach wants them back in tomorrow.

City continue their bid to maintain their lead at the top of the league when they host reigning champions Hibs on Wednesday while Rangers host Partick Thistle and second-top Heart of Midlothian entertain third-placed Celtic.

Head coach Leanne Ross hails 19-year-old winger Lisa Forrest for her match-winning double.

"She is unbelievable. She works so hard, day in, day out.

"She puts so much pressure on herself as well as a youngster.

"But that's what she's got in her locker. Special things like that."

It is Forrest's first silverware but adds to the 26 won by big brother James, the Scotland winger, with Celtic.

City head coach Leanne Ross is delighted to secure the League Cup trophy for the first time since 2015.

"It feels brilliant," she tells BBC Scotland. "As I said before, it's been a long time since we've had our hands on this trophy.

"Any trophy is special, but to get this one back is a great feeling.

"I thought we were really good today. We looked at the game from last week and knew there were a lot of things we could do better and we have worked really hard this week to have a game plan.

"We played differently today and I am proud that the players carried it out to a tee."

City defender Amy Muir, co-captain with Lee Gibson, tells BBC Scotland: "It is what you want to do as a captain, lift trophies and win silverware and obviously to have the chance to go up there with Lee and do that is amazing.

"I think it was well-deserved today and I'm really proud of everyone.

"I think it has been a long time since we have lifted one of the cups and it's massive for the club.

"It is great looking back at what the club have done in the past, but it is about building our own success and hopefully that sets us up for the rest of the season."

Rangers are left to lick their wounds after failing to lift the League Cup for a fourth consecutive season.

They still have a Scottish Cup semi-final, which the Glasgow side will be strong favourites in, against Montrose to look forward to, with City facing Celtic in the other.

Meanwhile, they will be aiming to make up the five-point gap at the top of the league with City after beating the leaders last weekend.

Of course, a reminder that it is a historic win for City as they are now level with Hibs as winners of the League Cup for a record seventh time.

It is a massive trophy for City.

Leanne [Ross] is building her squad and they are now playing the style she wants and they are reaping the benefits.

They probably deserved it because they started so strongly and they still have two trophies to go for.

Two-goal Lisa Forrest is delighted with her first domestic cup win.

"I am just so buzzing to say that we'e won it and to get it over the line," the City winger tells BBC Scotland.

She bundled in the opener but then fired the second with a stunning strike.

"All my team-mates are on at me for not shooting enough and I just saw the goal and just thought let's see what happens and thankfully it went in," she says.

"It is credit to the full team today. I thought it was a really good performance.

"We weren't happy with the performance last week, so to come here today, it's amazing."

City goalkeeper Lee Gibson is delighted with her 21st major medal.

"It is always nice to get your hands on silverware and it's a while since we've been able to do that in cup competitions," she tells BBC Scotland.

"It is great we are in all three competitions. We've got our hands on one and we still have two to go, but we'll enjoy tonight and get back to league action on Wednesday.

"It is really good for momentum for us. We were really disappointed last week [losing to Rangers in the league] - we thought we were terrible and so far away from the performances we've been putting in."

City were cagey to begin with, or were they tactics?

They went for it in the final stages and got their reward.

City are the only side to have conceded fewer than double figures - with eight - in the league this season.

Rangers, who have conceded 21, need to conjure two in the final five minutes of normal time and whatever stoppage time is added.
