I survived sepsis - now I manage Burnley Women
Away from the WSL for a moment and down to the second division, where Burnley manager Jackie Bachteler has a remarkable story to tell.
The American will be in the dugout at Turf Moor today for the first time - less than a year after being diagnosed with sepsis and fighting for her life just weeks after joining the club.
It took her months to recover and she still suffers from regular post-sepsis symptoms, but it has given 37-year-old Bachteler a new perspective on life.

It's a huge result for Palace, you can see the emotion in the coaching staff, the squad and the bench. That was an absolute shift by them, they had to dig deep and it wasn't pretty at times. They came here with a gameplan, frustrate Arsenal, who had chances but couldn't convert.
As the frustration grew, Palace's confidence grew. They thoroughly deserve those points.

Newcomers Palace hold off Arsenal onslaught for a point
Women's Super League newcomers Crystal Palace held toothless Arsenal to a goalless draw at Emirates Stadium.
Mariona Caldentey and Lisa Baum both struck the bar for the hosts, while the Gunners' 2025-26 top scorer Alessia Russo sent a golden chance wide in the first half.
The game opened up toward the latter stages as Palace, managed by former Arsenal midfielder Jo Potter, sought to pinch a winner. But it was the Eagles goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin who starred by making nine saves.
"We knew we had to strengthen in many departments to fight in this league," Potter told BBC Sport of former Arsenal keeper Peyraud-Magnin, who they signed from Denver Summit on loan in the summer.
"It's that experience of knowing what top-level football is like. She's so calm, so laid back and it really helps in that position."
It was hard to understand how Arsenal went into half-time without a goal, after they converted 79% of possession into nine shots, of which three forced Peyraud-Magnin to make a save – though she didn't have to do anything to stop Arsenal's best chance of the half.
Baum could hardly have made it easier for Russo, finding her 10 yards out with just the goalkeeper to beat, and it was unlike the England striker to fire wide from such a position.
Russo had had an earlier effort cleared off the line, while Caldentey struck a half-volley against the crossbar as a cautious Palace kept bodies behind the ball.
Palace summer signing and Arsenal academy graduate Teyah Goldie came closest at the other end, heading over the bar while under pressure from Lotte Wubben-Moy after a free-kick.
The second half told a similar story, with Arsenal failing to convert chances – though none so clear as Russo's first-half miss.
Teenager Baum, who was the match-winner on her WSL debut against Brighton last weekend, seated Goldie with a tricksy turn but rifled her shot against the crossbar.
Palace centre-back Allyson Swaby gifted the Gunners a late chance by bringing Russo down on the edge of the box, but Olivia Smith struck the free-kick wildly over.
Nonetheless, the 0-0 draw has extended Arsenal's unbeaten run to 19 games, matching a club record set between August 2011 and October 2012.

"If you take one eye off them, Arsenal will absolutely wipe the floor with you," Potter said after Sunday's draw.
Last season the Gunners scored 28 league goals at home, with only Manchester United coming away with a clean sheet while Leicester City were handed a 7-0 drubbing.
Palace approached their visit to the Emirates in practical fashion but their defensive display, though impressive, did not decide this game.
Instead, it was the Gunners' missed chances, amounting to a huge 2.37 xG, that handed Palace a point.
"It was frustrating," Arsenal manager Renee Slegers told BBC Sport. "We're disappointed with the result - we wanted more for ourselves and the fans.
"Yes, there was good things but at the end of the day it's about scoring and we didn't do that today.

The prospects look bright for Palace who, after a 1-0 victory last week against Everton, are one of of two teams in the WSL yet to concede a league goal.
But title challengers Arsenal, who were also wasteful in their opening win against Brighton, need more than clean sheets if they hope to lift a first WSL trophy since 2019.
