Rochdale will play Boreham Wood at Wembley in the National League promotion final after beating Scunthorpe United at the Crown Oil Arena.

An own goal from Scunthorpe's Will Evans and a nicely taken finish from Devante Rodney secured Dale's passage to the final before Declan Howe's consolation strike for the Iron.

Following a terrific regular season campaign, in which they won 33 league matches and amassed 106 points, Rochdale were able to pick themselves off the canvas after they were floored by Josh Stones' goal for York 13 minutes into stoppage time which saw the Minstermen promoted as champions at their expense last Saturday.

Dale will face a Boreham Wood side – who won at Carlisle United after extra time earlier in the day - which they finished 16 points above this season and will start as favourites for the Wembley showpiece in seven days' time.

Scunthorpe, who beat Southend United in Tuesday's play-off eliminator, were unable to recreate their heroics of last season and pick up a second promotion via the play-offs in succession following an impressive first season back in the fifth tier.

The home side broke the deadlock inside three minutes as Callum Perry sent Luke Hannant in behind on the left and the midfielder's dangerous low ball into the middle was diverted into his own net by Scunthorpe defender Evans with Emmanuel Dieseruvwe behind him ready to pounce.

The early goal did not affect Scunthorpe's rhythm and Callum Roberts drove forward with the Iron's first meaningful attack but his shot was straight down the throat of Manchester City loanee Oliver Whatmuff.

Tenacious play from Pat Jones created a great opportunity for Scunthorpe to equalise but there were no takers in the middle when he pulled the ball across the six-yard box.

Hannant continued to prove to be a threat at the other end for Rochdale and his shot towards the top corner was well palmed out by Scunthorpe keeper Louis Jones.

Just over 60 seconds after the restart, Scunthorpe's Jean Belehouan was caught dawdling and Hannant had a glorious opportunity to give the hosts a two-goal cushion but he curled a right-footed effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Rodney got his aim spot on for Dale though, bending a beauty into the far corner past the despairing dive of Jones, to give the home side clear daylight.

Dale's number 10 almost bagged his second three minutes later, foraging a way through the heart of the Scunthorpe defence, but his effort at the near post was beaten away by Jones.

Scunthorpe looked destined to pull one back but substitute Alfie Beestin was denied by a last-ditch challenge inside the area by Dieseruvwe before Whatmuff kept out a header from Howe.

Howe did then get his rewards for gambling on a long punt from keeper Jones to slip the ball past an on-rushing Whatmuff and into the bottom corner to give Scunthorpe hope with 10 minutes to play.

With a new-found momentum, Scunthorpe threatened an equaliser when another long ball landed at the feet of Howe again but his strike was superbly blocked by Ethan Ebanks-Landell as Dale managed to hold on and avoid a repeat of last Saturday's dramatic conclusion.

'Something further was meant for this team' - reaction

Rochdale boss Jimmy McNulty told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I was really proud of the team and the personality on display in the midst of an occasion that people thought we may of not arrived at because of any psychological disappointment after our galling draw that lost us the title last week.

"The courage and football on show was amazing. I'm really, really pleased for the team that they were rewarded with a win that takes them to Wembley."

On how the side have coped since last Saturday's last-gasp draw with York: "If I'm being honest with you, we just all got on the drink together straight after the game and had a great time. To exorcise the demons and celebrate what had been an amazing season up until that point, and it was honestly a great part of our recovery.

"I felt like something further was meant for this team. I'm so glad that we can now take the Rochdale fans down to Wembley with us."

Scunthorpe boss Andy Butler told BBC Radio Humberside:

"Immensely proud. My first mention is to the fans today. Incredible support, it felt like a home game.

"We gave everything we possibly could. Rochdale are an incredible side. I thought we've been class and, as I stand here right now, I couldn't be prouder of the football club as a whole – fans, board, owners, directors, family, everyone.

"We have character in abundance in this group. Two years today I came in, it's been enjoyable, tough, a lot of pressure. Not everyone's seen eye-to-eye with me in terms of selection but what I have got is a group of players and staff that believe in what we're trying to do.

"I give everything I possibly can to this football club. I'm proud to be a manager of it, from youth team player, to captain, to first-team coach and manager. As a manager you want your side to replicate you and I think they do that."
