Bromley moved closer to promotion to League One and preserved their unbeaten home record with a goalless draw, that was still entertaining, against Cambridge United.

The Ravens could not find the goal that would have secured a place in the top three and sent them up to the third tier for the first time in the club's history, with Kellen Watts making a huge block in added time to earn an important point for Cambridge.

Us' striker Shayne Lavery had come closest to scoring when he headed against the bar in the first half.

Cambridge's emergency loan goalkeeper Jack Walton made a double save to keep Bromley out as the hosts pushed for the winner in the second half.

The result means Bromley still need one more win, or two draws, from their final two games to secure promotion.

That is unless Notts County fail to beat Barnet on Saturday, in which case Andy Woodman's team would be promoted before they kick another ball.

Cambridge remain third, six points behind Bromley and with a game in hand, and two points ahead of fourth-placed Notts.

The 0-0 scoreline really does not tell the story of the game.

This was two of the league's best sides both playing to win right until the end, creating chances in both halves.

Cambridge looked a real threat in transition throughout, while Bromley were typically dangerous from dead ball situations and the left boot of Mitch Pinnock.

Bromley have now missed two chances to secure automatic promotion to the third tier, which would be the first time in their 134-year history to reach that level.

But Woodman, looking on from the stands as he served a touchline ban, will be happy with the response from his players after a disappointing defeat at second-placed MK Dons.

He made five changes to his side, including recalling club captain Byron Webster for the first time since February.

They almost had their big moment deep into added time as Cambridge somehow survived a goalmouth scramble.

But the visitors could easily have been out of sight at the break, with Ben Knight and Dom Ball both shooting wide before Lavery, who later went off with an injury, rattling the crossbar having beaten Bromley keeper Grant Smith.

The Ravens keeper had to be alert to tip over a header from Watts, while Omar Sowunmi came close for the hosts when his header straight down into the floor bounced up and just over the bar.

Neil Harris' side have their own promotion hopes in their hands - win their three remaining games and they will be in League One next season.

All eyes will turn to Meadow Lane this weekend as Notts County face Barnet. If the Magpies fail to win, Bromley will be assured of a place in the top three.

And Cambridge would need just five points to book their spot as well.
