Arsenal thrashed Leicester City 7-0 to condemn the Foxes to a bottom-placed finish and increase pressure on Women's Super League leaders Manchester City.

Frida Maanum headed in a 25th-minute opener on her 100th WSL appearance before assisting Smilla Holmberg two minutes later as the hosts doubled their lead.

The Norway midfielder was involved again as Arsenal netted a third through Stina Blackstenius, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up to score again before the break.

Arsenal's dominance continued after the re-start with a Holmberg tap-in, while substitutes Mariona Caldentey and Leah Williamson took the tally to seven.

The chastening defeat leaves Leicester seven points adrift of 11th-placed West Ham - a gap they can no longer bridge with only two games remaining.

It means Rick Passmoor's side will go into a relegation play-off against the team that finishes third when the WSL 2 concludes on Saturday.

Arsenal, meanwhile, move within eight points of league leaders Manchester City, who have played two games more than the Gunners.

City's push for their first WSL trophy since 2016 was jolted by a surprise defeat by Brighton on Sunday and, while the title race is still in their hands, Arsenal could pile on pressure if they win their two games in hand and close the gap to two points.

Arsenal analysis: Gunners cut through Leicester to send City warning sign

When Manchester City dropped points on Saturday, it gave Arsenal fans a small glimmer of hope.

The WSL title race may be out of the Gunners' control but, if they can win their two games in hand, they will be breathing down City's neck when Andree Jeglertz's side meet West Ham on what could prove to be a nervy final day of the season.

Aiming to reach a second successive European final, Renee Slegers opted to rest Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Caldentey, Caitlin Foord and Alessia Russo before the second leg of their Women's Champions semi-final against Lyon on Saturday.

But the European champions demonstrated their strength in depth and asserted complete control in the opening 45 minutes as they cut through Leicester's defence with ease.

As if the Foxes needed more trouble, Slegers called upon Russo and Caldentey at half-time, while Williamson and Foord were brought on after Olivia Smith and Emily Fox picked up knocks.

Caldentey showed her quality with a sublime curling finish before Williamson's glancing header fizzed past substitute keeper Katie Keane.

The Gunners have not lost a league match since October and another convincing victory will not only boost Arsenal's confidence as they head to Lyon with a one-goal advantage, but it will also serve as a fierce warning to league leaders City.

Leicester analysis: Feeble Foxes hit rock bottom but second chance awaits

Finishing 12th in the WSL usually signals the end of a team's top-flight status, but Leicester City have got a valuable second chance to remain in the division.

Two games are left to play, but all roads now lead to next month's play-off, where their place in the WSL will be on the line.

The Foxes will have a keen eye on the final day of the WSL 2 to see whether it will be Charlton, Birmingham City or Crystal Palace - separated by just one point at the top of the table - that miss out on an automatic qualification place and become their play-off opponents on 23 May.

It will be the first such fixture in the English women's game after WSL Football announced last year that the WSL would expand from 12 to 14 teams for the 2026-26 season.

Unless Leicester, who looked low in both ideas and confidence, can pick themselves back up and find some form in their next two fixtures, they will go into the play-off without having won a match since mid-December.

Charlton, Birmingham and Palace - whoever it may be - will certainly relish playing a team that has only scored 10 goals all season.

What's next for these teams?

Arsenal travel to Lyon on Saturday for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final (14:00 BST), while Leicester host Chelsea on Sunday at 14:30 BST.
