Tom Pidcock is emotional after victory as he dedicates the win to fellow British cyclist Fin Tarling.

Tarling, 19, died during the Volta a Portugal earlier this month following a high-speed collision with a van which had strayed on to the closed road.

"It was a hard road after the Tour de France to be honest."

"I want to dedicate this win to Fin Tarling and to Josh Tarling - seeing him start the Vuelta was pretty incredible, so I want to dedicate it to him and his family."

"I crashed pretty badly in practice on Friday and my back was hurting from the first lap. The last two laps I just had to push and stretch that gap before a final sprint. That was a pretty hard race."

Delight for Tom Pidcock as he rides home out by himself to win the rainbow jersey and a second men's cross-country world title.

The double Olympic champion is now a double world champion as he finishes in a time of 1:25:26.

There's even more good news for Great Britain as Charlie Aldridge holds off a late challenge from Canada's Cole Punchard to take the silver medal and make it a British one-two.

Pidcock lifts his bike above his head in celebration. His last world title was in Glasgow in 2023 and he's repeated the trick in 2026.

There are high fives on the finishing straight for Sina Frei as she becomes the world champion for Switzerland.

She cruises through in a time of 1:27:50 and lifts her bike to the sky beyond the finish line.

The battle for second place is intense between Nicole Koller of Switzerland and Martina Berta of Italy but on the line Berta just edges clear to take the silver medal.

The pair finish one minute and seven seconds behind Frei.

Great Britain's Evie Richards comes home in sixth place.

The 2026 Mountain Bike World Championships are taking place in Italy this week and BBC Sport will be showing Sunday's action live from Val di Sole.

Coverage of the elite cross-country women's and men's events will be on iPlayer and the BBC Sport app and website from 11:50 BST with the women's elite race.

There is a strong British contingent at this year's championships, which conclude with the infamous and highly technical "Black Snake" downhill track.

Double Olympic gold medallist and 2023 world champion Tom Pidcock is a last-minute entrant in the men's cross-country after finishing ninth in this year's Tour de France.

Pidcock won gold at the Paris Olympics in 2024, retaining the title he won in Tokyo three years earlier when he became the first British athlete to win a mountain bike Olympic medal.

In-form Charlie Aldridge is fresh from success in the European Championships earlier this month where he completed a double in the short-track and cross-country.

He claimed under-23 world gold in 2023 and will be vying for his first senior World Championship win in Italy.

Former under-23 world champion Evie Richards will be looking to improve on her fourth-placed finish at last month's European Championships.

However, she will have to contend against a strong field, including reigning world champion Jenny Rissveds, European champion Sina Frei and Martina Berta, who will be looking to win on home soil.
