It's a good channel. It was there to be left and Tom Latham dangled his bat.

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.1 overs

    Latham c Rew b Archer 4 (NZ 8-1)

Tom Latham hangs his bat to a delivery back of length from Jofra Archer and he edges it into the gloves of James Rew.

There was just enough movement off the seam from Archer to the left-hander who trudges back to the pavilion knowing he should have left that well alone.

The Oval crowd cheer in celebration. A handy early breakthrough for England.

  3. NZ 8-0published at 2 overs

Some uneven bounce with the new ball has Matthew Fisher open mouthed.

He skids one slightly low-ish between Devon Conway's bat and pad.

It's a good pitch but there's still some juice in it.

New Zealand have got an incredible chance to level the series if they bat with sense today.

Matthew Fisher, buoyed by a maiden Test half-century, will share the new ball with Jofra Archer.

Tom Latham takes a middle-and-leg guard.

Fisher is full first up and Latham gently pushes him into the off side for a single.

  6. NZ 7-0published at 1 over

Some decent carry from Jofra Archer's final delivery of the over which Devon Conway shoulders arms to.

  7. NZ 7-0published at 0.4 overs

    Beautifully played by Devon Conway.

Slightly overpitched by Jofra Archer and the Kiwi opener plays a classical straight drive to mid-off's left which whistles away for four.

England have to strike early to continue with that momentum of the last wicket partnership.

  9. NZ 2-0published at 0.1 overs

Jofra Archer limbers up at the top of his mark before running in,

His first delivery is on Tom Latham's heels and the Kiwi opener flicks it into the legside for a couple.

Joe Root, meanwhile, has England's players in a huddle just inside in the boundary.

Root, collar turned up and sunglasses on his cap, imparts some final words of wisdom.

Tom Latham and Devon Conway are loitering on the edge of the boundary at The Oval, ready for the resumption.

100 runs behind. Extras of 53 - without those it wouldn’t be so bad. Bowlers - get closer to the stumps, better fielding required.

    Margaret, Ireland

Unfortunately England gave away 53 extras - completely negating Emilio Gay's innings!

    Alan, Wantage

What’s telling is that New Zealand only required 12 overs to score 100 more runs. England absolutely cannot go to the same bowling plan. Especially to Phillips.

We're taking lunch, at basically the standard time with the final wicket falling just before 1pm.

A handy last-wicket partnership for England, but they had a terrible start to their morning, losing three wickets for three runs as Matt Henry ran riot.

The New Zealand seamer finished with figures of 5-80, with Will O'Rourke taking a couple of wickets and Nathan Smith and Kyle Jamieson one apiece.

Here's Timothy Abraham to take you through the afternoon session.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 84 overs

Baker c Latham b Jamieson 4 (Eng 291 all out)

Kyle Jamieson finds the ball that breaks the partnership and ends the innings.

Sonny Baker faces his first five balls without scoring then edges the sixth to Tom Latham at second slip.

England concedes a first innings lead of exactly 100, which could have been a fair bit worse had it not been for that 53-run 10th wicket partnership.
