Pipe Bands of Yesteryear
The definitive bagpipe programme featuring top quality music from Scotland and far beyond.
Gary West is in reflective mood as rewinds the clock to take in the music of some of the great pipe bands of the past, including several that are no longer with us. The industrial communities of the central belt of Scotland are well represented with sets from Dysart and Dundonald, Polkemmet Colliery and the eight-times world champions through the 1950s and 60s, based in a Grangemouth paper mill, Muirhead and Sons. Dowco Triumph Street from British Columbia and the Lothian and Borders Police bands go through their musical paces too, and there’s a stop off in Melbourne, Australia, for a set from the Victoria Police. Away from the pipe band scene, we dip into some classic recordings from Robert Mathieson, Yorkshireman John Walsh, and the Breton bagpipe and bass guitar duo of Patrick Molard and Alain Genty, while we bookend this week’s programme with two highly charged, full octane offerings from The Scott Wood Band and Rory Campbell & Malcolm Stitt.
