A New Pibroch and a Modern Classic
Gary West explores recent pipe compositions including a brand new pibroch born in Canada.
As a form of music which is at least 500 years old, it is a rare thing to get the chance to hear a brand new pibroch which was born only a matter of weeks ago. Bruce Gandy of Halifax, Nova Scotia, introduces his new pibroch composition and gives it its world premiere broadcast on Pipeline. There’s also a hattrick of performances of another modern classic tune, ‘Smelling Fresh’ composed by James Duncan MacKenzie, as well as sets from elite level players, Roddy MacLeod, Willie McCallum and Callum Beaumont. Staying with the ‘brand new’, we sample our first taste of a forthcoming track from bellows pipes star, Brighde Chaimbeul, and a classic performance from the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band.
