3. Mum's the Word

Twelve-year-old Meena faces racial abuse and hears some dramatic family news. Meera Syal reads her own novel. From 1996.

12-year-old Meena Kumar is an Asian girl living a fairly uneventful life in the Black Country village of Tollington near Wolverhampton in the 1970s - surrounded by her loving, if slightly eccentric, Punjabi family. But then one day she meets Anita Rutter.....

Meena hears racial insults and is also shocked when she hears some big family news.

Actress and comedy writer Meera Syal reads her first novel - abridged in ten parts by Doreen Estall.
