BBC Radio 2 In Concert

Thursday 24 March
8.00-10.00pm BBC RADIO 2

American country pop singer-songwriter Taylor Swift
American country pop singer-songwriter Taylor Swift

Jo Whiley presents a headline gig from multi-Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios on 23 March.

Taylor Swift's rise to fame is staggering. From the release of her first single in 2006 as a teenager, it was only a two-year journey to becoming the best-selling artist in America in 2008. In the following year, Taylor became the youngest ever artist to win a Country Music Association Award, one of only six women to win the prestigious Entertainer of the Year prize.

Later that year, she beat Beyoncé by becoming the female artist with the most Billboard Top 40 singles this decade, and she also set a record for the most songs on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist at the same time, with eight singles from the re-release of her 2008 album Fearless, which went on to be the most awarded country music album of all time.

Also in tonight's programme, Irish band Villagers join Jo live in the studio and she takes a look back at all the live music on BBC Radio 2 over the past week. In this week's Gig Guide, she has the latest news about recently released tickets for up-and-coming tours.

Performance On 3

Thursday 24 March
7.00-9.15pm BBC RADIO 3

The English Concert launches a new partnership with the fast-rising star of the fortepiano, Kristian Bezuidenhout. Their programme opens with Symphony No. 1 in E flat major K16, which Mozart composed at the age of eight. It concludes with performances of two of the composer's later piano concertos, No. 11 in F, K413 and No. 12 in A, K414.

There's also a chance to hear the ever-popular Eine kleine nachtmusik in a period instrument performance, and the solo keyboard fantasy in C minor, which offers a glimpse of Mozart's improvisatory skills.

This is followed by music from members of the Arcanto Quartet in their careers as soloists, including cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras in Debussy's Cello Sonata.

House Beautiful

Thursday 24 March
11.30am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4

To tie in with the Victoria And Albert Museum exhibition The Cult Of Beauty, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen considers the effect of the aesthetic movement on the home in Britain.

In a backlash to the mass-produced goods on show at the 1851 Exhibition, many artists and craftsmen initiated a movement that made beauty the focus and ambition not only of art, but also of all things including household goods and furnishings.

Laurence visits Leighton House in London, the opulent studio home of painter Frederic Lord Leighton, which was open for the public to admire and emulate.

Laurence traces the style to the very heart of middle-class suburbia where all things artistic became an obsession. He hears how glossy home magazines are descendants of the Victorian home hints, and how the tiles and wallpapers people choose, as well as the idea of lifestyle and good taste, can be attributed to what happened during the 1870s.

Science Betrayed Ep 2/2

Thursday 24 March
9.00-9.30pm BBC RADIO 4

Dr Adam Rutherford explores the scientific evidence behind product advertising and meets those responsible for policing the research claims made by manufacturers.

Adverts go out every day using the phrase "scientifically proven", together with claims as diverse as the speed of your broadband, the age-reducing properties of face cream and the health benefits of certain food products. PR agencies create glossy adverts to enhance sales, with an independent set of scientists reviewing the science in the claims to make sure that what they say is what people get.

Adam investigates these claims and asks what "scientifically proven" actually means.
