Transfer fees often reflect potential as much as proven quality. In Elliot Anderson's case, Manchester City appear to believe they have bought both.
At 23, Anderson will arrive at Etihad Stadium as their record signing - beating the £100m City paid for Jack Grealish - having enjoyed a remarkable campaign for Nottingham Forest in which he quietly established himself as one of the Premier League's most complete central midfielders.
While Forest finished 16th, Anderson's influence on their performances was extraordinary.
No player in the Premier League recorded more touches than Anderson's 3,300 during the 2025-26 campaign.
He also led the division for duels won (298), possessions won (306) and fouls won (80), underlining just how frequently he involved himself at both ends of the pitch.
Those numbers paint the picture of a midfielder who is constantly in the game. He demands possession, regains it more often than anyone else and rarely allows the intensity of his performance to drop.
His quality on the ball is equally striking. Among Premier League central midfielders, Anderson completed more passes (2,038) than anyone else and also led the position with 376 line-breaking passes.
Rather than simply recycling possession, he consistently looked to eliminate opponents by playing through defensive lines and advancing Forest up the pitch. That blend of security and ambition is rare.
The physical data is every bit as impressive. Anderson covered 411km across the Premier League season, second only to Everton's James Garner, while his 1,895 high-intensity pressures ranked second among midfielders.

'Pereira will get a good job somewhere else' - Hodgepublished at 12:51 BST 3 July

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Steve Hodge is confident Vitor Pereira will get "a good job somewhere else" after a successful stint at the City Ground.
Pereira was appointed in February as Forest's fourth manager of the season when he replaced Sean Dyche.
He guided them to 16th in the Premier League and to the Europa League semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Aston Villa.
On whether he has sympathy for Pereira, Hodge told BBC Radio Nottingham's Shut Up And Show More Football podcast: "I don't because managers know the ground can be shifted from under your feet very quickly and they are well paid.
"He will get a good job somewhere else. I'm sure he's a bit frustrated but he will have moved.
"His CV look good again after keeping Forest up and reaching a European semi-final. His few months at the club have made him look like a manager you would want [at your club] again."

Excluding own goals, Ndoye's goal was the fastest goal in a second half of a World Cup knockout match (45:46) since Davor Suker's goal for Croatia against France in the semi-finals in 1998 (45:25).

Nottingham Forest have triggered their option to extend goalkeeper Matz Sels' deal.
The goalkeeper is now tied to the City Ground until 2028 after the club activated a 12-month extension last week.
It came after Club Brugge asked about the 34-year-old's availability, with Forest stating Sels was not for sale.
He has made 96 appearances for the Reds since joining from Strasbourg for £5m in 2024.
The club is in the market for a new goalkeeper after Stefan Ortega and Angus Gunn left when their contracts expired at the end of the season.
John Victor will be available again after a serious knee injury ruled him out for the season in January and Sels was expected to remain number one under Vitor Pereira.
Yet the head coach is being replaced by Oliver Glasner after Forest made the decision to end Pereira's reign.
Former Crystal Palace boss Glasner will become Forest's fifth head coach in just under a year, with confirmation of his appointment expected later this week.

Incoming Nottingham Forest boss Oliver Glasner may not work with Manchester City-bound midfielder Elliot Anderson, but he still has a number of players who have been at the World Cup.
Winger Dan Ndoye's Switzerland are aiming to reach the last 16 when they face Algeria on Friday.
They topped Group B ahead of co-hosts Canada, with Ndoye starting two of the three games and coming off the bench in the 2-1 win over Canada.
Ibrahim Sangare started three of Ivory Coast's four games, with the Elephants exiting the competition after their late loss to Norway in the last 32.
The midfielder was a late substitute in their opening 1-0 win over Ecuador as Ivory Coast finished second in Group E, with Sangare setting up Nicolas Pepe's second goal in their win over Curacao.
New Zealand finished bottom of Group G with Chris Wood unable to score for the All Whites. They suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat by Belgium after losing to Egypt, having drawn their opening game 2-2 with Iran.
Defender Tyler Bindon, who was on loan at Sheffield United last season, came off the bench in the opening two games before starting against Belgium.
Forest start their pre-season fixtures at Notts County on 18 July.

If anybody thought it was going to be a normal summer at Nottingham Forest, then they weren't really paying attention. It turns out Vitor Pereira, who arrived in February with a contract until next summer, had a clause allowing either party to end it before the end of June.
Given that the rumoured new contract for Pereira in May hadn't emerged, with further rumours of a move to Saudi Arabia, it did beg the question: what's going on?
Well, Oliver Glasner is the answer. In some ways it's understandable — numerous top managers were available this summer and while it seemed as though Forest had accidentally found themselves a head coach for the near-future, it was not a long-term plan by design.
Who's to know what would've happened with Pereira — he certainly earned his chance at a full season. Picking up the pieces of two disastrous managerial appointments, the Portuguese steered us to Premier League safety and a Europa League semi-final. And he did it with grace, charm and humility.
However, Glasner is a proven winner — and took Crystal Palace to hitherto unseen heights. A Europa League trophy with Eintracht Frankfurt, an FA Cup with Palace and last season's Conference League is quite the record.
The strange beef between the two clubs will no doubt continue now, although ultimately Palace's Uefa demotion saw them clinch a European trophy and we haven't exactly poached an incumbent manager.
There is a fear that Glasner has a habit of falling out with club hierarchies — and Evangelos Marinakis will not take kindly to a manager who thinks he calls the shots. But equally, the owner wants the club to have a winning mentality — which is precisely why he's brought in Glasner.
As usual, Forest are box office — even if it's just for the controversy. With Elliot Anderson expected to complete a £116m move to Manchester City, the transfer window will no doubt be an interesting one too.
