  11. Elmer trail attracts thousandspublished at 12:52 BST 25 October 2019

A trail featuring a popular storybook character has attracted thousands of followers.

Elmer's Great North Parade features 50 large and 114 little individually decorated sculptures based on David McKee’s Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.

They can be viewed at sites across North and South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle for another week, and then will be auctioned to raise money for St Oswald's Hospice.

The project's organisers say that since it was launched on 21 August, 9,381 people have signed up to its dedicated app, and more than 7,500 photographs have been uploaded to it.

Project lead Jane Hogan said the most popular Elmer was "Elephish" at Whitley Bay, with "Disco Wilbur" outside St Nicholas Cathedral, coming a close second.

She added: "One of the aspects of the trail we have enjoyed most is seeing the photos people are uploading of themselves and their friends and families out and about.

"The parade really is bringing people together and we’re delighted about that.”

  13. Blocked sewers prompt 'wipes' flush warningpublished at 11:46 BST 25 October 2019

    BBC Look North
    North East and Cumbria

Damage caused by blocked sewers is being highlighted by a utility company, as it urges people to be careful about what they flush down the toilet.

Northumbrian Water says it has cleared almost 10,000 blockages across its sewer network so far this year.

One of the main causes is wet wipes and plastic, which can also end up in rivers or the sea, leading to pollution.

Richard Warneford, from Northumbrian Water, said: "Despite wet wipes being promoted as ‘flushable' they rarely are, as they may leave your toilet bowl when flushed but can clog up householders' plumbing and can also cause blockages in our network of sewer pipes.

"Blockages can have devastating consequences to people's homes being flooded and the environment being polluted, which is so saddening to see."

Newcastle v Wolves (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Joelinton - known as Joe to manager Steve Bruce - arrived at St James' Park in the summer from Rapid Vienna.

The 23-year-old Brazilian striker has so far struggled to live up to the reported £40million price tag, managing just one goal in nine appearances.

But Bruce is "convinced" he will come good.

“He’s only young, he only turned 23 two months ago," said Bruce. "He needs time to settle… It takes a little bit of time to adjust. Joe will be a fine player for this club, I’m absolutely convinced of that.”

Steve Bruce is wary of the threat posed by Wolves - aren't we all.

Obviously, he's hoping those who make the trip up to St James' Park on Sunday will be sent back down the A1 with tails firmly between their legs.

“We’re at home against a very decent Wolves side but we’re capable – we know that – and we’ll have to be at our best to win," he said.

“The one thing they have got is good players, who play in a certain system and do it very well. They’re a threat – they’re a good side.”

And with that, Steve bid the baying press pack a fond farewell.

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka signed a new six-year deal at St James' Park this week.

Manager Steve Bruce is hopeful midfield siblings Sean and Matty Longstaff will follow his lead.

“These things don’t take one day any more… I’m quietly confident we’ll get there. They’re two young lads with a big future.”

He added: “He’s [Dubravka] a very, very good goalkeeper. We’ve unearthed one, because not a lot of people had heard of him… We’re delighted that he’s tied himself to the club.”
