Wavelengths: Episode Three - Scene One

Ayesha is seated at the editing suite. She looks fed up as she re-edits the work done earlier. Andy enters and sits himself down next to Ayesha.

ANDY: Cutting Jo down to size are you?

AYESHA: She’s not happy at all.

ANDY: She'll get over it. It’s not as though she’s the backbone of the station.

AYESHA: It was a good story.

ANDY: A good story does not make a good reporter. James knows what he’s doing.

AYESHA: Heartfelt … Have you met Renee by the way?

ANDY: No. Sam did all the research for me. I’m just putting the face to the words … And what a face!

Andy looks properly at the screen for the first time.

ANDY: Wow … No way!

AYESHA: What?

ANDY: There’s no way she’s related to Rocco.

AYESHA: Don't be horrible. Rocco’s lovely.

ANDY: Lovely, maybe. Fit, not even close. (Seriously thinking.) Maybe she’s adopted?

AYESHA: Would you like to meet her?

ANDY: I’m interviewing her in an hour, stupid.

AYESHA: I mean properly.

ANDY: Would I? Just put me in a room with her, Ayesha, I’ll do the rest.

AYESHA: Tomorrow. Four o'clock.

ANDY: (Suddenly worried about the prospect.) Tomorrow? Erm, I could be busy actually. I've got an essay … thing.

AYESHA: Well, she'll be here anyway. I’ll give you a proper introduction.

ANDY: No disrespect, but I really don't think I need your help with the ladies.

AYESHA: No, I know. I just thought it would be the polite thing to do … seeing as I’m the one who hired her.

ANDY: What did you say?! She’s working here? What as?… Hey, I know; therapist. Employed to massage the stars in between takes.

AYESHA: Close, Andy. As of tomorrow; Renee’s our new presenter.

Pause for the information to sink in.

ANDY: What?!

Scene Two – Interview Room

Wavelengths: Episode Three - Scene Two
Wavelengths: Episode Three - Scene Two

Andy and Renee sit opposite each other, both in comfy chairs. An on-air interview in progress.

ANDY: (dramatic!) 15th of July 2005. A beautiful summers evening. Until 7:23 p.m... Tell me about it Renee.

RENEE: Well, The Bull was very busy because of the send off for Molly.

ANDY: (interrupting to give extra information) The well loved and now deceased member of your neighbour hood watch.

RENEE: Yes. Will was…

ANDY: (interrupting) The barman.

RENEE: He was putting up posters and things when Eddie came in.

ANDY: (interrupting) The Arsonist.

RENEE: Hang on, I never said that.

ANDY: Please. Go on.

RENEE: Eddie was raving about Jade…

ANDY: (interrupting) The…

RENEE: (getting there before Andy) The girlfriend. They'd just split up and he wasn't too happy. To be honest I just thought he was drunk and wasn't paying too much attention to what he was actually saying. I was talking with a friend.

ANDY: Boyfriend?

RENEE: Well, sort of….He could have been.

ANDY: (false sympathy) Not to be?

RENEE: Not since he died, no.

Andy looks embarrassed; he scans his notes to get back on track.

RENEE: He was one of the victims of the fire.

Andy throws a look that could kill over his shoulder to someone off camera.

ANDY: Yes, the fire. Tell me about that. When did you know something was wrong?

RENEE: Not until it all happened. One minute I was sitting there planning my future; the next minute….

ANDY: Up in smoke.

RENEE: I wouldn't have put it quite like that.

ANDY: (to camera) So, there you have it. A tragic accident? Or something far more sinister? The actions of a raving lunatic? Or fate stepping in to change the course of lives forever? Whatever your view, it’s people like Renee who have to live with the consequences of events such as the great fire at The Black Cow... I’m Andy; and you've been listening to Wavelength.

Pause. Ayesha enters.

AYESHA: That was fine.

ANDY: That was perfect.

RENEE: That was the wrong name. It’s The Black Bull, not The Black Cow.

Andy stands quickly as he speaks and slams his notes down on his chair.

ANDY: Sam!! Why the hell didn't you give me the signal!! (waving his arm like an idiot) Isn't that your job? And look, I missed a whole section out!!

Andy storms off leaving Ayesha and Renee just looking at each other.
