The Oxford University team behind the study says any drink at or above 65C is "very hot" and poses a potential risk. Compared with people who drank "warm" beverages, those who consumed "very hot" ones had around a three times higher risk of squamouscell oesophageal cancer.

There are several thousand cases each year in the UK, but experts stress the overall chance of getting this cancer of the gullet is still low. Smoking and drinking alcohol are far bigger established risk factors, although waiting a few minutes for your hot drink to cool a bit is advisable.
