Creating the route has taken 18 years, an act of parliament, and extensive planning and construction. More than a thousand miles of new path have been built, with upgrades such as boardwalks and bridges. New legal provisions mean the route can also adapt to climate change, shiftinginland as erosion and rising seas reshape the coastline.
