What is a coral reef?

Coral reefs are made up of thousands of tiny corals called polyps, that come in all different shapes, sizes and colours. Some corals look like plants, but they are actually made up of millions of animals that create huge structures, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. In this episode of Deadly 60, Steve and the crew travel to Indonesia and the Maldives to see the coral reefs for themselves.

What has happened to coral reefs and why do they need saving?

Throughout our planet's history, coral has supplied 25% of all ocean life with nutrients and shelter, but rising ocean temperatures has 'bleached' and destroyed nearly all of it! It's up to us to restore and protect coral, slowing down the destruction and encouraging new coral to grow.

In this Deadly 60 special, Steve and the crew join teams of scientists and conservationists across the globe to see how their work can help the coral reefs.

🪸 In the Gili Matra Marine Park in Indonesia, Steve meets the heroes from Coral Catch. The crew head down to the coral reef nurseries to see how the team are helping to make the ocean healthier with coral reef nurseries, restoring the crucial ecosystem.

🪸 Over in the Maldives, Steve finds out how scientists have discovered that coral larvae can actually talk to each other! They play the sounds of a healthy coral reef to encourage the corals to settle and help the damaged reefs.

Celebrate Earth Day 2026

Earth Day is a very special annual celebration of our planet, helping to raise awareness and support for global environmental protection. It takes place on 22 April. See in this episode and quiz how Steve teams up with scientists who are trying to preserve and restore damaged coral reefs all over the world. From making coral nurseries, to making safe environments for reproduction, the teams are thinking outside the box every day to make sure coral reefs can thrive in the future.
