Gary and Nicki wait for day 3's result

The Apprentice - The search for a radio star: Day Three

We're getting really cunning now and putting our radio apprentices to the test, surprising them by asking them to present a live, almost-unrehearsed news bulletin. Who's the second casualty? Who gets fired today?

It's day three of the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Apprentice-style-search-for-a-future-star-type-thing and we welcome back the remaining four victims to the studio of the Cambridgeshire Breakfast Show, where presenter Jeremy Sallis is joined by Lisa Reynolds from BBC Look East.

Together, it's their job to judge how well our four apprentices have completed their second task.

BUT on day three we spring a nasty surprise on Gary, Sam, Nicki and Chelsea. We sent them off the day before and asked them each to record a 30-second news bulletin, but just before they go on air, the cunning (Sir) Sallis decides that he wants to find out how good they really are on live radio.

Armed with a short news story each, we're expecting them to work together to broadcast a live bulletin. Sam begins with a serious 'newsy' story about finance; Gary follows with a story about a 'love shack' for amorous frogs (really, you couldn't make it up!); Nicki gets sport ("I don't know anything about sport but I'll give it my best shot); and Chelsea rounds up the bulletin with today's weather ("Like a Radio 4 pro", says Lisa).

Listen to today's BBC Radio Cambridgeshire apprentices on air and the judges' decision, then listen as the final two battle it out trying to convince Sir Jeremy NOT to throw them off the show:

"Gary - You're FIRED!"

Wednesday's challenge

The remaining three apprentices - Sam, Nicki and Chelsea live to fight another day but now we're getting really tough on them! It's another LIVE broadcast for Thursday AND an early start as we're asking them to accompany reporter Jozef Hall in the Radio Car at 7am to Cambridge's Market Square.

Not only that, but they've got to come up with their own stories. We're expecting them to FIND the news, FIND people to talk to and report LIVE into the Breakfast Show where Jez and Jozef will judge their efforts.

Good luck, apprentices!

Keep your eyes on this page as we follow the progress of our students throughout the week

Jeremy,I am the Programme Manager for media programmes at CRC and just wanted to say that all of us here are thoroughly enjoying the your apprentice activity this week and we are very proud of all of the students. We feel that they have done very well so far (despite your firings!) Just wanted to offer a little advice, try not to be too mean to them as we may all end up working for one of them some day. Thanks again for giving our students this fantastic opportunity and the chance to win a valuable work placement at the BBC. RegardsDrewPS- If they don't mention it themselves could you please mention the student's online radio station Core Radio and our live RSL FM broadcast in June. Thanks again.
