The country's most recent troubles can be traced back to the 1980 coup in which a group of army officers of indigenous tribal origin led by Samuel Doe seized power.

Doe forged closer ties with the United States, visiting President Reagan in Washington, and received substantial amounts of aid in return for exclusive trade agreements.

His authoritarian regime banned newspapers and political parties, and held staged elections.
