Liberia has suffered decades of mismanagement, instability and conflict.

Despite having rich resources in the form of diamonds, rubber and timber, its GDP per capita is well below the average for Sub-Saharan Africa, as is life expectancy and levels of childhood mortality.

Its capital, Monrovia, has had no running water or electricity for more than a decade.
