South African police call off the search for bodies in a disused goldmine

Police in South Africa have called off a search for the bodies of men reported to have been shot in an abandoned gold mine near Johannesburg.

Initial reports said that as many as 20 bodies could be in the shaft but police ended their search after finding just four.

Our reporter Nomsa Maseko has just come back from visiting the site and spoke to Focus on Africa's Peter Ndoro.

It is not clear whether the men were employees of the mine or illegal workers.

Gold mining in South Africa is a massive industrial operation, so how does illegal mining work?

Network Africa's Audrey Brown spoke to David McKay, editor of the mining news website Mining MX in Johannesburg.
