Going to the chapel...

Faith: Mark Turnbull contemplates marriage as a gift from God.

It isn't something which suits everybody but, I have always thought of marriage as a gift from god?

Unfortunately not everyone who gets hitched does it in a church, and now you can almost have a ceremony anywhere; but, as a Christian I believe marriage is a serious business; and should be treated as sacred.

This may be an old-fashioned view, and one which doesn't sit well in these days of casual relationships, unwanted and unplanned births, and the constant lack of respect for each other people appear to have nowadays.

Add to this the ruling this week handed down by the house of lords as far as divorce is concerned, and, this gift from god appears to be losing its attraction completely.

To think, that because of their lordships ruling you can be taken to the cleaners if the marriage breaks down? Will this not bring an extra dimension to any would-be couples?

This week I have had two invitations to golden wedding anniversaries; couples who've shared fifty years of marriage together; I am sure not all of the times have been good, but, they remembered those promises made in the presence of family, friends, and god, to have and to hold for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish.

Perhaps those sitting in judgment should have reminded themselves of those words before making even more of a mockery of marriage?
