| A guide to Sheffield The Full Monty put Sheffield on the map in Hollywood Sheffield. Home to the Full Monty and... the Full Monty. It is sometimes hard to escape the notion that the story of a group of unemployed steelworkers who get their kit off is Sheffield - especially to Americans. Whether that movie did the Steel City more harm than good is open to debate - but Sheffield has got an awful lot to offer the casual visitor. You want pubs? Choose from a vast array of ale houses, all within stumbling distance of the Crucible. Trendsetters will make a bee-line for Devonshire Street and The Forum, while those who prefer a more traditional pint could do far worse than the nearby Devonshire Cat, a real pipe and slippers affair.
This Sheffield institution has got the perfect credentials for a wild night out, but be warned. Mixing it with the superstar DJs and their poss is not for the faint-hearted - those with an aversion to green face paint and screams of "ooh, ooh", should stay away. For those who prefer their culture in more traditional forms, there are a whole host of art galleries to choose from. Just around the corner from the Crucible, situated in the city's central library, lies the Graves Art Gallery. You will not find the Mona Lisa in here, but the exhibits on offer provide a pleasant way to while away the time between sessions. Take a hop, skip and a jump from the Graves and you'll find the city's newest cultural offering, the Millennium Galleries. A real heavyweight this one, with lots to see throughout the year. Throw in a plethora of decent value restaurants and there you have it, Sheffield in a nutshell. |
