A drop shot looked like the last option that Maja Chwalinska would pull out there, but that's exactly what she does. Diana Shnaider gets there, but her attempt at a lob falls just past the baseline.

A couple of winners later and she's got three break points.

    She only needs one!

We're seeing some really nice tennis in these early stages.

Diana Shnaider pulls out a lovely drop shot before Maja Chwalinska squeezes in a sensational passing shot - and then an even better one!

But the 25th seed responds with a fiery backhand cross-court return on Chwalinska's first serve. 40-30.

The way Maja Chwalinska has not allowed emotion to wash over her. It has been incredible to watch. She keeps everything together.

I think we all feel this is going to be a long one. Every point just takes that bit longer.

There it is. The drop shots have been flying off Maja Chwalinska's racquet in this tournament and that one dies as it falls on the other side of the court, leaving Diana Shnaider with no hope.

It's not the only thing that's working for qualifier, though. A booming forehand winner pulls her level at 30-30.

And now she's got herself a break point!

I think Diana Shnaider is going to have watched a fair few of Maja Chwalinska's last couple of matches. Shnaider is already going for that moonball, which is not giving too much pace to her opponent.

Maja Chwalinska is up and running in her first Grand Slam semi-final.

Not the easiest of service holds, but she gets on the board and that will help to settle any nerves.

Lots of Polish fans are starting to make themselves heard on Chatrier.

They clearly expected one of their players to be among the women's semi-finalists - four-time champion Iga Swiatek, not qualifier Maja Chwalinska.

The presence of the Poles will also have swelled the support for Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk earlier.

I am wondering if a lot of Polish fans had their tickets in advance expecting to see Iga Swiatek. There is a lot of red and white.

    Shnaider v Chwalinska

Maja Chwalinska is only the second qualifier in the Open era to reach the Roland Garros women's singles semi-finals after Argentina's Nadia Podoroska achieved the feat in 2020.

No qualifier has reached the Roland Garros final in the Open era.

And only one qualifier - Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open - has ever gone on to win a Grand Slam trophy.
