When Iga Swiatek was dumped out of the French Open on Sunday, it meant there were no previous champions left in either the men's or women's singles draws heading into the second week.

Opportunity knocks. But who will seize their chance over the next seven days in Paris?

In the women's draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka is the standout contender as she looks to win the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen for the first time.

Elina Svitolina and Mirra Andreeva are the only other players remaining among the top 14 seeds.

Just two of the top nine men's seeds remain in German Alexander Zverev and Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime.

But young stars Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik, Joao Fonseca and Rafael Jodar are among those hoping to cause a shock.

Svitolina is trying to take as many balls out of the air as she can. She has enough respect of the movement of Kostyuk to know these balls will not be put to bed otherwise.

    Svitolina 3-6 1-0 Kostyuk*

Elina Svitolina is having to work so hard to win some of these points because of Marta Kostyuk's athleticism, but she keeps her focus and eventually puts the point away on an important fifth point for 40-30.

Svitolina introduces a bit of variety to help her get to safety after Kostyuk forces deuce, and that will be a huge relief as she makes a positive start to set two.

Elina Svitolina has the opportunity to move into the world's top five at Roland Garros - but she needs to reach the final to do so.

    *Svitolina 3-6 0-0 Kostyuk

A great mini battle in that final game to end the first set, but it is the lower-ranked Marta Kostyuk who takes it - and you have to say it's deserved.

The 15th seed has been sharper from the start and is one set away from the first major semi-final of her career.

    Svitolina 3-5 Kostyuk*

The energetic Marta Kostyuk is by far the quicker around the court and leaps up into an angled forehand that Elina Svitolina can't get back.

But after that great effort, she presents Svitolina with a chance to get back into the set with a double fault for break point!

Kostyuk saves the first with a big first serve... and then a second as Svitolina misses a forehand.

Elina Svitolina rescues the first break point but she can't see off a second, overhitting a forehand.

That will be very, very frustrating after she managed to get the set back on serve, and now she needs to reset quickly.

Marta Kostyuk finds herself in a tight spot for the first time at 0-30, but puts up a great defence before hammering a forehand cross-court which has too much on it for Elina Svitolina.

Both players are finding their marks now, but it's Marta Kostyuk who is bringing more energy and variety.

    *Svitolina 1-4 Kostyuk

A brilliant backhand down the line from Marta Kostyuk helps her to a couple of game points but, for a second straight service game, the improving Elina Svitolina follows her to deuce.

Kostyuk keeps her cool once again to pick out a forehand winner, before Svitolina falters first in a baseline exchange to concede.

Four-time major semi-finalist Elina Svitolina is through to her sixth French Open quarter-final - and the 31-year-old has now reached the last eight of a Grand Slam on seven occasions since returning to the tour after giving birth to her daughter three years ago.

For Marta Kostyuk, eight years Svitolina's junior, this is just the second time she has reached this stage at one of the sport's biggest tournaments. She also got to the last eight of the 2024 Australian Open.

On facing her compatriot, Kostyuk said: "We have a really good relationship. She's a legend of Ukrainian tennis and it's such an honour to share the court with her.

"She's paved the way for a lot of Ukrainian girls and boys. She's doing great, especially this year, she's doing unbelievable. I'm so excited for this match."

When Marta Kostyuk high-fived fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the corridors of Court Philippe Chatrier after reaching the French Open quarter-finals on Sunday, it represented far more than a simple gesture of congratulations.

With their country at war, a mutual respect and admiration exists between the pair which transcends their ambitions on the tennis court.

Today, one of them will become the first Ukrainian women's singles semi-finalist at Roland Garros since the start of the professional era in 1968.

Whatever the outcome, the significance of that achievement is not lost on either player.

"There's going to be someone from Ukraine in the semi-final so it's already amazing," said Svitolina.

"It couldn't be a better tournament for us. It's an amazing achievement for Ukrainian tennis, we have so many great players coming up as well in such a difficult situation right now.

"It's really difficult and I think it's really inspiring for the next generation to really believe it is possible one day to play on this court and win."

It is the 19-year-old's second appearance in the semi-finals at Roland Garros, after also reaching that stage in 2024.
