England boss Thomas Tuchel created many talking points with his England World Cup squad selection last week, but Adam Wharton's performance in Crystal Palace's night of European history only made for more debate about his omission.

The midfielder delivered a man-of-the-match display as the Eagles beat Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final to win their first-ever European trophy.

Wharton will not travel to this summer's tournament after Tuchel picked Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Jordan Henderson, Eberechi Eze, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers as his midfield options.

Former England boss Glenn Hoddle was among many surprised by the decision, and he aired his views before and after Wharton delivered an impressive performance in Leipzig.

"A little bit surprised," he told TNT Sports before the 1-0 victory. "I love the way he looks forward and passes. He can hit killer balls, balls that take the whole defence out.

"I'm not sure we have many other players who can do that consistently from a deep-lying position, so my eyebrows definitely went up when I saw he wasn't in there."

After the game, Hoddle added: "This is the quality that we have got. I would've had him in the squad. He is a wonderful footballer."

Re Harry 10:10. I'm not a Crystal Palace fan, and I've nothing against Bournemouth, but currently they are at least as good as Bournemouth have been for the past few seasons. Palace are a bigger club than Bournemouth, with a larger fan base and, arguably, more potential.

I think it sums up what an incredible rollercoaster season it's been for Crystal Palace that’s ended in this amazing triumph.

You had Marc Guehi sold in January - one of their best players - to Manchester City. Oliver Glasner said that he and the players felt abandoned by the club. Jean-Philippe Mateta wanted to leave, then he failed a medical and had to be reintegrated into the team.

At that time, they were on a run of 12 games without a win, with the season in danger of collapsing. The holders of the FA Cup were knocked out by Macclesfield in one of the biggest FA Cup shocks ever, and at that point you couldn't really imagine being where we are this morning - but it's been an incredible couple of days.

I'd be surprised if Andoni Iraola makes a move to another Premier League club and it was Crystal Palace. If you said Newcastle United, yes - although that vacancy has yet to come about. I'm feeling Thomas Frank arriving at Selhurst Park would suit all parties and stylistically fit the current squad.

Oliver Glasner was asked immediately after the game whether he would reconsider and stay on at Crystal Palace. He was adamant it was not going to happen. Following him is going to be incredibly difficult, and you imagine the reason he is leaving is because he feels that, with the work he has done, he has taken the club as far as he can.

The one thing he said he was delighted about was that he will be able to see Crystal Palace playing in the Europa League next season, but whoever gets the job next year, it is a tough act to follow.

A wonderful achievement. Two fabulous years under Glasner, and another European tour to come. Congratulations should go to Steve Parish, who held his nerve when things got very tricky mid-season. Up the Palace!

I'd love Oliver Glasner to stay. We all love him and what a legacy he's left. He's been absolutely magnificent, and all the guys love him - being around the boys, seeing the affection they have for him. It's just such a shame.

I mean, it's heart-breaking really. I'm speaking to him last night saying, "Why can't you stay, please?" I mean, it's tragic, but yes, strange one, isn't it? It's typical Crystal Palace.

For Crystal Palace to make that stance and not be that club that finishes 10th to 12th, not be that club that has a good cup run one year while the aim is just to survive, you keep the manager, you keep the players, and you build.

If they lose Jean-Philippe Mateta and one or two more players, and the manager, it is a whole rebuild, and they are back to where they were two years ago. With the budget they have got, and with the stadium that they have got, Oliver Glasner has taken them to the ceiling. He has massively overachieved. To take this group of players on, they need investment - they need to go to that next level.

I find it crazy that Andoni Iraola would go to Crystal Palace - not because they're a bad club or anything, but because it feels like a like-for-like move. I would have imagined him wanting either a clear step up or a move away from the Premier League altogether.

  12. Palace wait on Iraola with Lampard a plan Bpublished at 09:55 BST

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

    Sami Mokbel
    BBC Sport Senior football correspondent

As BBC Sport revealed earlier this month, Andoni Iraola is the man Palace want to replace the outgoing Oliver Glasner, who insisted after the triumph in Germany that he has no plans to reverse his decision.

They have made the Spaniard a proposal and are awaiting his answer, within that are assurances that he will be permitted significant influence over the recruitment operation.

It is understood Palace want an answer by the end of the weekend.

The move is ambitious. Iraola has emerged as one of the brightest managers in European football; Bournemouth's qualification for next season's Europa League illustrative of his impressive body of work.

Palace believe they have done all they can to convince Iraola that they can provide the platform for him to continue building his reputation.

All that is left is Iraola's approval.

If the 43-year-old declines then Palace will move on to plan B.

Among the alternatives is understood to be Frank Lampard, who has key admirers in the Palace boardroom.

Releasing Lampard from his contract with Coventry provides an obvious stumbling block should Palace pivot to the former Chelsea midfielder.

But there is some optimism at Palace that Lampard, who is aware of the Premier League club's interest in him, would be open to joining ahead of next season.

Kieran McKenna, Pierre Sage, Sean Dyche and Thomas Frank have also been discussed as options.

Our success in the Conference League and Europa League shows the strength in depth of the Premier League, but that is also part of the reason it is harder to win the Champions League or achieve success with the national team. Top players are often exhausted by the business end of the season because of the intensity and competitiveness of the domestic schedule.

I wonder if Uefa will do something if the English teams do a clean sweep of the Europa League and Conference League again next season. Not a good look for the competitions if they just become a way for English sides to win a trophy.

The big players, Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta, stepped up when it was asked of them, and they got it over the line against difficult opposition.

J @ 08:48, what a disrespectful statement. For clubs like Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion and their fans, qualifying for a European competition is a mark of improvement and progress, and it should be celebrated as such. The fans get the chance to travel and watch their team play against continental opposition, while the club also benefits financially from the additional revenue.

  18. How much will Palace earn from winning the Conference League?published at 09:18 BST

    Crystal Palace 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

    Dale Johnson
    Football issues correspondent

We won't know for sure until the accounts come out, but we can compare it to last season's winners, Chelsea.

They received $22m (~£16m) for winning the tournament last season. Palace would get quite a bit less than that because part of the earnings are based on the "value pillar", which gives money based on performance over five and 10 years in Europe.

By contrast, when Tottenham won last season's Europa League, they earned 45.3m euros - £39.5m.

Moments like this are what you live for. I didn't think I'd see this in my lifetime. It's fantastic and the club deserve it. When you're born and bred in south London, this is such a special moment.

I was there at the FA Cup final when they beat Manchester City, so to watch this with my family is amazing.

The 15-20 minutes after half-time, Palace were outstanding, and that's where they won the game.

If Palace can do it, every team has got to believe they can go and do it. It's a great achievement from everyone at the football club.

Some might say a year later than planned, but Palace are in the Europa League next season, along with Bournemouth and Sunderland, who will represent the Premier League in the 2026-27 competition.
