Chris Wood gave Nottingham Forest a crucial lead in their Europa League semi-final with Aston Villa.
The striker's 71st-minute penalty - after Lucas Digne's absurd handball - allows Vitor Pereira's side to take a slender advantage to Villa Park for next week's second leg.
It was the 200th career goal for a player who has had a tough season, spending six months out with a knee injury.
Emi Martinez's brilliant reaction save - clawing the ball off the line to deny IgorJesus after 33 minutes - prevented Forest from scoring earlier.
Villa beat Forest 3-1 at Villa Park in the Premier League in January but must overcome a deficit as Unai Emery searches for a fifth Europa League title.
Stefan Ortega saved from Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers before the break and he also kept put Ollie Watkins' instinctive effort in the second half.
Forest then edged ahead when Wood smashed in a penalty after Digne's rush of blood.
The left-back inexplicably put his arms up as Omari Hutchinson tried to hook a deep ball back into the box just as it looked like it was dropping out, with VAR ruling it had not gone completely over the line and out of play - and therefore was still live.
'Where are you? Wow. It is so, so bad' - Emery's remarkable VAR rant
Penalty king Wood 'last piece of puzzle' for Forest
Forest deserved their win, which gives them something to defend in next week's second leg - but should Elliot Anderson have been sent off?
The midfielder's first-half challenge on Watkins went unpunished but left his England team-mate in agony on the turf. Replays showed Anderson clattered into the Villa striker's ankle.
Watkins tried to get retribution later, barging into Anderson and avoiding a yellow card, but Villa may feel a sense of injustice they were not playing against 10 men.
To make matters worse for Villa, Anderson was the heartbeat of Forest's performance which earned them a justified advantage.
Would it have come had referee Joao Pinherio - or VAR - sent Anderson off?
The official then awarded them the match-winning penalty after a lengthy VAR delay following Digne's bizarre decision to raise his hands to Hutchinson's hook back.
Nothing should take away from the effort and determination from Forest, though, as they extended their run to nine unbeaten games in all competitions - their best run of the season.
Crucially, they do not have to win at Villa Park next week. And while Villa will continue to be dangerous and the tie is certainly not over, it is advantage Forest.
Watkins suggested on Wednesday that this Europa League campaign could be the last chance for Villa's current squad to achieve something.
They have been together for a long time - six of the players who started Emery's first game in November 2022 began the match at the City Ground. A seventh starter against Forest, John McGinn, came off the bench in that game three and a half years ago.
That stability has worked well for Villa - two years ago, they reached the Conference League semi-finals and also qualified for the Champions League.
But as they chase a first major trophy in 30 years, Villa need to overcome a first-leg deficit to ensure they are not classed as nearly men.
They have stumbled in the second half of the season but should still finish in the Premier League's top five to reach the Champions League - although that would not end the silverware drought.
It was just Emery's second defeat in his past 28 Europa League games - having won the tournament four times - but Villa need the master magician of the competition to turn it around at home next week.
Nottingham Forest: Vitor Pereira's side go to Chelsea on Monday (20:00) before the return leg at Aston Villa on Thursday (20:00).
Aston Villa: Tottenham come to Villa Park on Sunday (19:00) and Villa will look to reach the Europa League final in next Thursday's second leg against Forest.

Nottingham Forest are unbeaten in their last four home games against Aston Villa, all in the Premier League (W2 D2), drawing 1-1 earlier this month at the City Ground. Villa last won there in March 2019 in the Championship under Dean Smith.
This is the first major European semi-final between two English teams since the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League between Arsenal and Man Utd, won 4-1 by the Red Devils on aggregate.
Nottingham Forest are into their fourth major European semi-final, previously playing at this stage in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 European Cup – reaching and winning the final in both – and 1983-84 UEFA Cup where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Anderlecht.
For a second time in the last three seasons, Aston Villa are into a major European semi-final, losing 6-2 on aggregate to Olympiakos in the 2023-24 Conference League. Before this, their only other last four appearance was in the 1981-82 European Cup when they knocked out Anderlecht.
Nottingham Forest have had 232 shots, 88 shots on target and 414 touches in the opposition box, all the second most of any side in the UEFA Europa League this season behind Bologna in each category. They have accumulated the most xG, however (27.8).
Aston Villa have won 11 UEFA Europa League matches this season – only FC Porto in 2010-11 (12), Atlético de Madrid in 2011-12 (13) and Chelsea in 2018-19 (12) have won more in a single season. Villa have won their last nine in a row – the only English team st7 to win 10 in a row in major European football is Manchester City between May 2023 and March 2024.
Nottingham Forest shipped five goals in their first two UEFA Europa League games this season, but they’ve only conceded seven in 12 since then, with only Freiburg (0.5) conceding fewer per game from MD3 of the group stage onwards than Forest (0.6), while Forest have faced the fewest shots on target per game in that time (2.6).
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is set to manage in his seventh UEFA Europa League semi-final (since 2009-10) – no other manager has been in more than three. He lost his first one in 2011-12 with Valencia but has progressed from each of his last five, with Sevilla (2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16), Arsenal (2018-19) and Villarreal (2020-21).
Ollie Watkins has been involved in a goal in each of his last four UEFA Europa League matches for Aston Villa (4 goals, 1 assist). Wayne Rooney is the only Englishman to score or assist in more consecutive appearances (since 2009-10), doing so in seven in a row between February 2012 and November 2016 for Man Utd.
Only three players have created more chances in the UEFA Europa League this season than Nottingham Forest’s Callum Hudson-Odoi (23), while only three Englishmen have created more chances in a season since 2009-10: James Milner (31) and Adam Lallana (24) in 2015-16 for Liverpool and James Ward-Prowse in 2023-24 for West Ham (25).
