Motherwell make eight changes as they brace themselves to take on Europa League runners-up Freiburg in the Conference League play-offs
The gamble fails to pay-off as Euan O'Reilly strikes for Stenhousemuir in extra time
Scottish Championship Stenhousemuir stunned top-flight Motherwell in extra time to claim a place in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup and maintain manager Marvin Bartley's unbeaten start as manager.
Substitute Euan O'Reilly was the Warriors' hero after 113 minutes with a composed finish into the corner to send the home fans home happy and dreaming of a glamour tie in the draw for the last eight.
It was no more than they deserved against a much-changed Motherwell side who showed none of the free-flowing, attractive, composed football for which they have been lauded over the past year.
They were second best for much of the match, and could have been behind earlier in extra time.
A wonderful shot from Lewis O'Donnell looked for all the world destined for the net but instead came back off the inside of Matty Connelly's right-hand post.
This was after substitute Gus Stevenson spurned two glorious chances late on in regulation time.
Prior to that, Sam Young will also feel he should have done better than head straight at Connelly following a knock-down from a free-kick.
Motherwell's best chance fell to Tawanda Maswanhise 10 minutes after the interval, who nearly gave their best move of the match the finish it deserved.
His shot trundled narrowly wide, however, rather than nestling in the corner of the net after a rare outbreak of the visitors' usual neat, flowing football.
The first 45 minutes were mainly memorable for how scrappy Motherwell were in possession, an accusation rarely levelled at them in the past year or so.
Unrecognisable in more ways than one, given there were eight changes from the side who knocked HJK Helsinki out of Europe.
New manager Alfred Johannson had no option but to call for the cavalry, with Emmanuel Longelo, Alex Lowry, Regan Charles-Cook, Lukas Fadinger and Martin Moormann all summoned from the bench.
But all that experience couldn't withhold Stenhousemuir's determination to become giant-killers and it's the Warriors who deservedly march on in the League Cup.
Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson: "Well, I think we were quite far off our recent level, and that's why when we can't perform, and then the opponent, they are good as well.
"And they were better today and we shake hands and say congratulations, they deserve to go through.
"The players that started this game, the players that came on into this game, they are good enough to win this game.
"We didn't manage to perform, I have to look at selection, but I also have to look at how we approach this game in total."
Stenhousemuir manager Marvin Bartley: "It's about the players, it really, I'm delighted for them.
"Before the game, everyone had written us off again. We were playing against a fantastic Motherwell team with a brilliant manager who are going hell for leather in Europe and domestically as well recently.
"But I always knew what my players could do, and I always knew that if we got the game plan spot on, we could disrupt them and we could punish them going the other way, and we did that today.
"These boys are training twice a week and over 120 minutes they're matching a team who are full-time, a really fit and good footballing team as well."
A massive European night at Fir Park awaits Motherwell as they host Freiburg in the Europa Conference League play-off first leg (19:30 BST).
For Stenhousemuir, a trip to face Queen's Park in the Championship having taken four from a possible six so far following their promotion on Saturday (15:00).
