Bristol City goalkeeper Sam Tickle was among five debutants for the Robins
Aaron Pressley's second-half strike proved enough for Walsall to inflict Carabao Cup embarrassment on Championship side Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
The League Two side took a 47th-minute lead in the first round tie when Reece Smith crossed low from the left and Pressley netted with a right-footed shot from eight yards.
City piled on the pressure in the closing stages, forcing a succession of corner kicks, but Lee Grant's team defended with tremendous commitment to earn their place in the second round.
Between them the two teams featured 12 debutants, with City fielding five and Walsall seven. The visitors would have led at the interval but for Sam Tickle's remarkable series of saves on 32 minutes.
City's new goalkeeper dived to parry a firm header from Pressley and then twice regained his feet to keep out follow-up efforts from Pressley, Isaac Moore and Courtney Clarke.
At the other end, Jed Ward saved from Jed Wallace and Lorent Tolaj, while Cam Pring was a regular threat on the left flank.
Ward distinguished himself again in the second half to ensure a losing start for new City boss Michael Skubala, who cut a frustrated figure on the touchline.
