Hannah Cain scored twice as Wales continued their positive start to Women's World Cup qualifying with a 4-0 victory over Albania in Wrexham.

Cain steered Wales in front early on before Elise Hughes' close-range strike doubled the home side's lead before half-time.

Albania never looked like mustering a response, with any hope of a comeback wiped out early in the second period as Rhiannon Roberts headed in a third for dominant Wales.

Cain then guided home her second goal of the night – and the sixth in her past four internationals – as Wales cruised to a comprehensive win.

Wales' second successive victory means they have seven points on the board at the halfway point of the group phase as they bid to reach a first Women's World Cup.

Rhian Wilkinson's team have been knocked off top spot in Group B1 thanks to Czech Republic's 5-0 win over Montenegro.

The Czechs, who lead the way courtesy of away goals scored, are expected to be Wales' main rivals to finish first in the group, which would mean a favourable path to the 2027 tournament in Brazil come the play-offs later this year.

With the sides who are level on points separated initially by head-to-head records, it may well be that top spot will be decided when Wales host the Czech Republic in their final group game in June.

Until then, the task for Wales is to simply keep pace with the Czechs, meaning their job was done at Stok Cae Ras.

Wales analysis: No Holland, no problem

Wales were without Ceri Holland, a player Wilkinson says it is not possible to replace, after the Liverpool star withdrew from the squad through injury.

The loss of Holland was a significant blow for a squad still readjusting following the retirement of Jess Fishlock last October, yet in truth she was not missed as Wales had more than enough quality to overcome opponents who are 40 places below them in the Fifa rankings.

Wilkinson had urged her players to "live in Albania's half" before kick-off and, for the most part, they did as their head coach demanded.

The opening goal might have come earlier, with Cain twice going close before sweet passes from Angharad James and Mared Griffiths – and some hesitant goalkeeping from Rajmonda Spahiu – allowed the Leicester City forward to steer home a fifth goal in Wales' past four games.

Cain turned provider as she crossed for Wales' second, although Spahiu played a part again as her fumble allowed the alert Hughes to hook the ball in from close range.

This was a game of attack-versus-defence for long spells – and while Wales kept a first clean sheet in 18 games with comfort, the Albanian rearguard regularly wobbled.

Wales stretched their advantage when a corner was only half-cleared and teenager Griffiths crossed for veteran Roberts to score just her third goal in 87 internationals.

The fourth goal was perhaps the best of the evening, as a crisp move ended with Lily Woodham centring for Cain to steer home on the half-volley.
