Algeria battled back brilliantly twice against Austria in their final group game to qualify, and almost won the game, but they face a mountain to climb to get past another alpine nation.

Switzerland have never won a World Cup knockout game in eight attempts but that record ends here. Granit Xhaka is the heartbeat of their side and he will lead them into the last 16.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

    AI's prediction: 2-1

  4. Manzambi is key man for Switzerlandpublished at 14:54 BST 2 July

Switzerland v Algeria (Fri, 04:00 BST)

A rising star with recent Europa League finalists Freiburg, 20-year-old Manzambi already has three goals from three shots on target at his first World Cup.

This century, the only under-21s to score more at one finals were Thomas Müller in 2010 (five) and Kylian Mbappé in 2018 (four) – that’s quite some company to keep.

    Will he score again tonight?

  5. Xhaka set for 150th cappublished at 14:53 BST 2 July

Switzerland v Algeria (Fri, 04:00 BST)

Swiss skipper Granit Xhaka made the most line-breaking passes (53) in the group phase, and only Rodrigo Bentancur (29) won possession more (24).

All set for his 150th cap, Xhaka aims to lead his country to three consecutive World Cup wins, which is something they’ve never managed before.

  6. Mahrez and Maza hoping to make differencepublished at 14:52 BST 2 July

Switzerland v Algeria (Fri, 04:00 BST)

Algeria remain winless against European opposition (D4 L5) at the World Cup since shocking West Germany in 1982.

Two of the North African's key creators, Ibrahim Maza and Riyad Mahrez, will be hoping to change that record tonight.

Nicknamed ‘Mazadona’, the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker completed the most dribbles (13) during the group stage, including six out of six against Austria.

Captain Mahrez, now aged 35, finally scored his first World Cup goals, and three goal involvements so far is already a new national record.

  7. What to expect from Algeria and Switzerland?published at 14:51 BST 2 July

Switzerland v Algeria (Fri, 04:00 BST)

Thanks Chris. The games keep on coming. At 04:00, there's another knockout match.

These two sides had contrasting group stages with Switzerland cruising through unbeaten, and Algeria conceding a stoppage time equaliser against Austria to mean they finished third in Group J.

Switzerland have reached the last 16 at the past three World Cups while Algeria have only got to that stage once before, in 2014.

Oh, and one last thing. Algeria manager Vladimir Petkovic, from Bosnia-Herzegovina, managed Switzerland for seven years.

  8. Sutton's predictionspublished at 14:49 BST 2 July

Portugal v Croatia (Fri, 00:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
    Former England forward

    bbc

Cristiano Ronaldo is 41 but has played every minute for Portugal so far, which I think is embarrassing for Roberto Martinez. I've never known a manager to pander to a player as much as he does.

Portugal have some incredible players but, as great as Ronaldo once was, they are being held back by having him permanently on the pitch as their centre-forward.

But, while he is not the player he was, Croatia are ageing too and are not the team they once were either.

This will be close but I see Portugal taking it in normal time. With me writing Ronaldo off, he will probably score the winner.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-0

    AI's prediction: 2-1

  9. Guess who's back?published at 14:47 BST 2 July

Portugal v Croatia (Fri, 00:00 BST)

    "I'm back! I'm back!"

After scoring twice in his side's 5-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan, Cristiano Ronaldo stared into a television camera lens and screamed a defiant message for those who said he was Portugal's problem at the 2026 World Cup.

The 41-year-old could not hide his feelings, nor contain his joy as he celebrated the historic feat of becoming the first player to find the net in six editions of football's biggest tournament.

Ronaldo had been widely criticised after Portugal's laboured 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their opening Group K tie, while other global stars including Argentina's Lionel Messi, France forward Kylian Mbappe, Norway talisman Erling Haaland, Brazil's Vinicius Jr and England captain Harry Kane all impressed in the first two weeks.

He was kept quiet in the 0-0 final group stage match draw with Colombia, however.

  10. Will Ronaldo finally score in a World Cup knockout?published at 14:45 BST 2 July

Portugal v Croatia (Fri, 00:00 BST)

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has notably never scored in any of his previous eight such contests.

He has attempted 29 shots in the knockout stages of the competition without netting, the joint-most of any player on record (since 1966) along with Brazil’s Roberto Carlos.

  11. Modric still making a differencepublished at 14:43 BST 2 July

Portugal v Croatia (Fri, 00:00 BST)

Nikola Vlasic scored a late header as Croatia booked their place in the World Cup last 32 with victory over already-qualified Ghana in Philadelphia.

That goal ensured Luka Modric earned his 201st cap for Croatia with a win.

Aged 40 years and 291 days, Luka Modric became the oldest player to provide an assist at the World Cup against Ghana.

Not bad for a 40-year-old, eh?

  13. Ronaldo and Modric- one last dancepublished at 14:41 BST 2 July

Portugal v Croatia (Fri, 00:00 BST)

Between 2012 and 2018, Ronaldo and Modric played 222 matches together for Real Madrid, winning 13 trophies, including four Champions League titles.

They formed the spine of a side that dominated European football, with Modric orchestrating play from midfield and Ronaldo finishing attacks with relentless consistency.

They also both share the best accolade a footballer could win- the Ballon d'Or. (Ronaldo five times, Modric with one)

The two European icons meet again tonight, not as partners, but as rivals.

This World Cup tournament could be the last time we see both of them on the pitch together, but who will come out as the winner?

  15. Who does the Opta think will go through?published at 14:39 BST 2 July

Spain v Austria (Thurs, 20:00 BST)

Spain are strong favourites to reach the round of 16, with De la Fuente’s side winning 70.6% of the Opta supercomputer’s 25,000 pre-match simulations of a 90-minute match.

However, previous last 32 ties have already shown that nothing can be taken for granted, and Austria may well fancy their chances of winning more than the 12.2% predicted by the supercomputer.

A draw, meanwhile, accounted for the remaining 17.3% of simulations.

The supercomputer gives Spain a 79.2% chance of progressing to the last 16 overall, whilst Austria’s chance is 20.8%.

  17. Oyarzabal 'can score the big goals, when it matters'published at 14:35 BST 2 July

    Spain v Austria (20:00 BST)

    Cesar Azpilicueta
Former Spain defender and BBC Sport Columnist

    Cesar Azpilicueta banner

[Mikel Oyarzabal] is 29 and is not celebrated like Kylian Mbappe or Harry Kane as one of the best centre-forwards in the world, but he had a strong season with Real Sociedad in La Liga and he has an incredible record with the national team.

I have heard people say that Spain are missing a really elite number nine but with Oyarzabal, we have someone who we know can score the big goals, when it matters. We appreciate him, even if he is not seen as a superstar by others.

He used to play more on the wing but in the past couple of years he has transitioned more into a striker who can go in both directions, making runs past defenders or dropping deeper to link play.

Oyarzabal is also still able to go wide when needed, finding the spaces left when teams are attracted to Yamal, and his movement and intelligence makes him so effective. He is doing a great job.

After two goals and an assist in the first half against Saudi Arabia he will be full of confidence, and I like our other options up front too.

Ferran Torres was not as clinical when he came on for Oyarzabal in that game but I still feel he is in good form, while Borja Iglesias offers a different kind of striker profile.

Iglesias is someone people might know a little bit less, because he does not play in the Champions League with Celta Vigo, but if you've seen him you will understand why he is important for the squad.

He is someone who can be a bit more of a target-man, occupying the centre-backs. He has not been used yet at this World Cup but I am sure at some point there will be a game where Spain will need his qualities, depending on the opposition.

I know exactly what I am talking about because I had to mark him during my last match as a professional, less than a month ago in Vigo.

  18. Austria looking to keep first World Cup clean sheet in 12 gamespublished at 14:33 BST 2 July

Spain v Austria (Thurs, 20:00 BST)

Austria have struggled defensively at the tournament, and have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 12 World Cup matches since a 2-0 victory over Algeria in 1982.

Ending that run against Spain will certainly be essential if they are to continue the recent theme of knockout-stage upsets.

Spain are another one of my tips for this tournament - I've got a few of them - and they are going to go deep into this World Cup.

As well as Lamine Yamal they have got so many other talented players, and it is good to see old 'Bigfoot' - aka Mikel Oyarzabal - playing well up top.

They have not really hit peak performance yet, but that might change here.

Ralf Rangnick's all-action Austria side will try to press the way they always do, but Spain will just play around them.
