I don't understand the lineup, especially given who we have available. Khusanov is not a right back, Lewis shouldn't be anywhere near the starting lineup if Gonzalez is available. How is Foden starting but not Cherki? This is going to be an odd season.

  2. Train chaos on opening weekendpublished at 13:04 BST

    Peter Gillibrand
    BBC Newsbeat

It wouldn't be a football season without at least a bit of train chaos, would it?

Last night saw trains cancelled for Manchester United fans while they were losing 2-0 against Hull City in their opener.

Today, CrossCountry said most of its routes are down because of a power cut and services to Premier League games in Manchester and Newcastle might be "extremely busy", and it's impacting fans from all tiers of football playing today.

Bournemouth fan Reese Proctor, 22, told Newsbeat "it's frustrating" after his journey to Manchester to watch the Cherries was disrupted at short notice.

Reese hopped in with his mate to get there but it's added an extra two hours onto his journey to Manchester, he says, calling it "unacceptable.

"If I couldn't drive, or have [my friend] to drive... I wouldn't have been able to go to the match. That would have been a waste of a match ticket."

As for the game... Reese is as confident in the team as he is with the trains.

"In the nicest way possible, I love the boys, but it's Man City," he said.

"I'm just here to tick off the stadium and enjoy the day out."

Man Utd losing at Hull was a surprise, Spurs at Brentford? Not at all. two 17th place finishes on the spin! Lots of money spent on bang average players, £85 mill on a player relegated twice the last two seasons! Not surprised at all by that loss

    Richard

Man United fan, obviously disappointed by yesterday’s performance. But Hull are a Premier League side, not the Sunday League no hopers some are making them out to be. Don’t be surprised when other “Big Six” lose to them.

Unai Emery admitting Ollie Watkins could leave Aston Villa before the end of the transfer window adds further uncertainty to the club's summer of upheaval.

Al-Hilal want the England striker, who turns 31 in December, and have had bids rejected.

Ezri Konsa's £51m move to Arsenal has been rubber stamped, while Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have already left.

Emi Martinez is eager to leave after seeing his move to Juventus collapse, and Villa have already signed his replacement in Zion Suzuki.

It leaves the pressure on Emery to continue finding answers amid the changes.

Watkins leaving, though, would represent a massive emotional departure from Villa with the striker playing a huge role in their rise after joining from Brentford in 2020.

Along with captain John McGinn and Konsa, Watkins - who has become an England international at Villa - has epitomised Villa's rise in the past few years, especially under Emery.

  9. 'There will be goals, mostly scored by City'published at 12:52 BST

Man City v Bournemouth (14:00 BST)

    .

A lot of people have been putting the boot into Manchester City after their performance in the Community Shield.

I don't think they will win the Premier League, but they aren't going to fall away to mid-table either. Look at the players they have got - I still think they will be right up there.

I'm expecting Bournemouth to be very attack-minded under Marco Rose, after watching his teams at RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg.

He is a front-foot coach but, in his first game, will he really be brave enough try to go toe-to-toe with City at Etihad Stadium?

I think he will and, because of that, I think there will be goals... but most of them will be scored by City.

    Sutton's prediction: 4-1

Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca has picked a starting XI containing six defenders for his first Premier League game in-charge of the club.

The system, though, looks like it could be fluid with an all-English midfield of club record signing Elliot Anderson, Rico Lewis and Nico O'Reilly.

Mateo Kovacic is on the bench, alongside Jack Grealish and Rayan Cherki.

Man City XI: Donnarumma, Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol, Anderson, Lewis, O'Reilly, Foden, Semenyo, Haaland.

New Bournemouth boss Marco Rose gives a debut to Portugal international defender Antonio Silva, who joined the Cherries from Benfica during the summer.

City linked Alex Scott also starts and this match could act as an Etihad audition for the Englishman.

Bournemouth XI: Petrovic, Smith, Silva, Hill, Truffert, Scott, Cook, Tavernier, Kluivert, Rayan, Evanilson.

We'll soon see if City are in transition. A lot of experienced players have gone, new players yet to gel, and Haaland looked leggy in the Community Shield. I personally think they'll struggle this season

  12. Foden in 'fresh start' under Marescapublished at 12:43 BST

Man City v Bournemouth (14:00 BST)

    Shamoon Hafez
    Football reporter at Etihad Stadium

This is an important season for Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, having struggled for form over the past two seasons.

The 26-year-old missed out on a place in the England squad for this summer's World Cup and told reporters in Hong Kong during pre-season that he is aiming for a "fresh start" under new boss Enzo Maresca.

Earlier today, the academy product had a new mural unveiled across from Etihad Stadium in conjunction with trading cards company Topps.

Will Foden start against Bournemouth this afternoon and can he rediscover the form we know he is capable of producing?

The opening weekend of the Premier League continues today with a fascinating set of fixtures that features new faces in the dugout, as well as familiar faces returning to take on their former club.

Manchester City are one of four teams playing today who will have new managers taking charge of their first league games, with Enzo Maresca having some giant boots to fill after replacing Pep Guardiola.

And later this afternoon Alexander Isak is set to return to Newcastle, as Liverpool begin their campaign at St James' Park.
