Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke last week about his side needing time to "re-build" and made a similar point after their draw to Hull on Saturday, when speaking with BBC Match of the Day:

"The players who joined us need some adaption. Some our adapting quicker than others. In everything we are building, we must try and add the players who joined us in the direction we want."

Fans are yet to see summer additions Johan Manzambi and Ibrahim Mbaye in action, so it may be too early to judge where Villa are at in terms of their attacking output this season.

But with Emery at the reins and fans seeing the potential in his new squad, it might just be a waiting game.

Aston Villa arrived at MKM Stadium on Saturday still searching for their first shot on target, goal and point of the season - against a defence who were yet to concede this season.

So it was always going to be tricky for Unai Emery's side to find a way past them - but with some better finishing up front, three points could have been theirs.

Nicolas Jackson's movement caused problems for the Hull backline and Villa created enough openings while generating an expected goals (xG) of 1.74, compared to Hull's xG of 0.58.

Yet they still lacked the cutting edge Ollie Watkins would have provided in the past seasons.

The striker's departure to Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal in the final week of the transfer window was always going to leave a void and Villa continue to search for a new identity after the arrival of a host of new names.

They broke their transfer record twice to sign forward Johan Manzambi and Jackson while also buying Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain for £47m on the deadline day.

Manzambi is yet to feature because of injury while Mbaye was an unused substitute on Saturday.

Villa will regret not capitalising on a good first hour - summed up by Emiliano Buendia's gilt-edged chance in the 54th minute when Zion Suzuki's superb 70-yard pass released George Hemmings, who cut the ball back for the Argentine to blaze over.

In the end, Emery's side were fortunate to escape with a point as Hull finished strongly and went closest to finding a winner.

And early signs are that Emery's new-look Villa will need time to reach the levels that took them to a fourth-placed finish and Europa League triumph last season.

Winless and goalless, Aston Villa match Roberto De Zerbi's Tottenham for one of the poorest starts of the 2026-27 season.

But even worse, Unai Emery's side haven't hit a single shot on target in 270 minutes of Premier League football - the lowest total on record by any side since 2003-04.

It's perhaps not surprising that Villa are struggling so much already this campaign after selling a large part of their squad this summer, including their two top goalscorers Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins. But is it all bad?

Ok, I feel like I have said this before, but from one "work in progress" to another.

We are going to rattle through some of the other talking points of the weekend now.

Whichever club we turn to next could probably be described as a "work in progress", as that term applies to pretty much ever team in the Premier League other than reigning champions Arsenal...

However, given my colleague Paul Birch raised the point, let's have a look at two teams, like Spurs, that are also yet to score a goal this season.

This is only the second time in Tottenham’s history that they have failed to score in any of their opening three matches to a league season after the 1974-75 campaign in which they avoided relegation by a point.

Despite such heavy recruitment in attacking talent, their 0-0 stalemate with Nottingham Forest marked the first time they failed to have a shot on target in a top-flight game since April 2022 against Brentford under then boss Antonio Conte.

However, it’s not just Spurs who have struggled to find the back of the net so far. With Coventry City and Aston Villa also goalless, 2026-27 is the first ever English top-flight season to see as many as three teams fail to score in any of their opening three matches.

Spurs did at least pick up their first point of the season at the City Ground, but their tally of 80 points from their last 79 league matches is under half the 168 points rivals Arsenal have accrued from the same amount of fixtures.

The bulk of Spurs' £350m summer spending was on midfielders who aren't particularly known for their goals - scoring 12 between them last season:

• Sandro Tonali - £100m from Newcastle
• Mateus Fernandes - £85m from West Ham
• Savio - £75m from Manchester City

Currently, it is loan player Omar Marmoush leading the Tottenham front-line.

He has managed one shot on target in two Premier League matches so far and with an output of eight goals in all competitions last campaign, do you expect the 27-year-old to find his feet and solve Spurs' goalscoring woes?

Roberto de Zerbi's expensively assembled side had 12 shots but failed to get any of those on target at the City Ground to continue their poor start in the top flight.

Including add-ons, Tottenham's summer outlay is over £350m and more is expected from the team after three winless top-flight games.

They are still trying to find an identity following 10 senior arrivals and a point can be viewed as a positive but they faced a Nottingham Forest side also winless and finding their feet under Oliver Glasner.

But with Richarlison, last season's 12-goal top scorer, excluded from the Premier League squad and expected to leave, they need to find goals from elsewhere.

Marmoush and Savio, big-money signings from Manchester City, were unable to inspire the visitors.

Savio was withdrawn on the hour while Marmoush missed his best chance, shooting wide with just Matz Sels to beat - although he was penalised for a foul in the build-up.

Tottenham did not play badly but after the summer spending spree it is not the level which is demanded or expected.

Hang on Liam, wasn't it supposed to be Dr Tottenham? Is Dr Everton a thing now too?

The early table tells us that David Moyes' side - albeit with only 18 senior players - is actually a tough nut to crack.

Regardless as to whether the match officials were right to rule out Neco Williams goal for Nottingham Forest, that does not change the fact that Tottenham remain winless and goalless.

It's the first time since 2021 that Spurs have not found the back of the net in three consecutive Premier League games, and they failed to even steer one on target at the City Ground.

But the one positive is that Roberto de Zerbi's side did at least secure their first point of the season.

So, how worried are you Spurs fans?

And there it is, clear evidence in the still image below that Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams did indeed handle the ball over the line and his subsequent goal at home to Tottenham was correctly ruled out.

Only four top-flight teams have conceded more than the six goals Manchester United have so far this season, with the Red Devils letting in exactly two in all three of their games so far.

After letting in some soft goals against promoted sides Hull City and Ipswich Town, mitigation in their draw with Everton yesterday did come in the form of the Toffees scoring two goal-of-the-month contenders.

“There’s been two strikes from distance really, two really good strikes from their point of view, so sometimes they fly in the top corner and more often than not they probably don’t, so there’s a little bit of that,” Manchester United boss Michael Carrick said of Tyrique George and Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ strikes.

“Obviously we can’t ignore it, we need to concede less goals to give us a better chance of winning games, but we’ll certainly look at that and keep improving.”

Since Carrick took over in January, his United side have conceded two goals in exactly half of his 20 league matches in charge, a record he will be very keen to improve upon.

Overall, the Red Devils let in 50 goals in 38 games last season, which was 23 more than champions Arsenal and only one fewer than both Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, who finished down in 15th and 16th places respectively.
