Ilias Chair scored twice as QPR tamed Portsmouth to record only their second win at Fratton Park in 30 years.

The 28-year-old also assisted for QPR's third goal to show how much he was missed as Rangers' campaign unravelled in the second half of last season when he was out for four months with a calf problem.

Portsmouth have big hopes of progressing in their third season in the Championship and took a deserved lead through Terry Devlin's fantastic strike.

But QPR clinically punished them on the break as Chair netted his first goals since November either side of a strike by Koki Saito.

Portsmouth began brightly and Conor Shaughnessy headed over and debutant Luke Brooke-Smith saw his shot saved before Devlin made the breakthrough on 15 minutes with a brilliant strike.

The visitors failed to clear a free-kick and Ebou Adams found Devlin in space just over 30 yards out and his right-footed drive swerved home, away from Northern Ireland team-mate Pierce Charles in the QPR goal.

QPR played on the counter-attack and they equalised in the 33rd minute thanks to some awful defending by Portsmouth.

Harvey Vale dinked the ball into the middle for Chair to touch home from close range with Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid and his defence rooted to the spot.

Julien Stephan's side were clinical, scoring from all three of their shots on target in the first half, as they countered again after 40 minutes when Chair fed Saito and the Japan international's shot was deflected off Devlin and past Schmid.

QPR's gameplan worked a treat and in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. Amadou Mbengue raced down the right before crossing for the unmarked Chair to steer home his second of the afternoon.

Portsmouth wasted chances to claw their way back into the game and Shaughnessy fluffed a free header wide before debutant Abu Kamara's weak shot was saved by Charles after the QPR goalkeeper had kicked the ball straight to him.

Charles also denied Marko Milovanovic and Rocco Shein should have done better with a shot before Josh Murphy, who returned following groin surgery, came off the bench to flash an effort across goal.

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent:

"It was a really strange game from my standpoint, we were in complete control. We had a very good opening 20-25 minutes and got the deserved lead.

"I thought straight away after conceding the goal, I think mentally we must have taken our foot off the gas because the first thing we did was lose a header and conceded territory. We ended up pinning ourselves in that left-back area, which sticks out in my mind because we just hadn't done that for the first 25 minutes.

"We were completely dominant, we moved the ball well, we tracked runners, we won tackles. We got into some really good areas and then after we scored, which is an issue I've got to get on top of, we seemed to fall apart."

QPR manager Julien Stephan told BBC Radio London:

"It was really interesting to see the reaction of the team after the goal we conceded. I enjoyed a lot the reaction of the players. No panic, just stick to the plan.

"We scored a good first one and after we were able to kill immediately the opponent by scoring in a short time the second and the third ones. I think that changed a lot the momentum of the game.

"I enjoyed a lot how we managed the first 25 or 30 minutes [of the second half] in terms of possession, but I didn't like the fact that we didn't kill the game in this moment. When we have the opportunity to kill, especially when we play away from home, we have to kill.

"It's really important and we let them live. In fact, in the last 15 minutes, they put a lot of players on our defensive line."
