Hull City's return to the Premier League has been rewarded with an ambitious summer transfer window.

The Tigers have completed 11 new signings so far and have broken their own transfer record twice in the process.

And with the Premier League back up and running, the club don't appear to be slowing down any time soon.

Manager Sergej Jakirovic recently confirmed to BBC Radio Humberside that Hull are chasing deals for a right-back, plus an additional striker.

Three Manchester United players; Ayden Heaven, Patrick Dorgu and Andrey Santos, started all six pre-season games for Michael Carrick this summer.

Santos linked up really well with Mason Mount in midfield in the first three matches, was paired with Tyler Fletcher for the best part of two games, then fellow new arrival Youri Tielemans in the defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Wroclaw seven days ago.

Then there is Carlos Baleba, whose medical is expected to take this weekend after a fee that could rise up to £70m was agreed with Brighton last night.

It means Carrick will have plenty of midfield options.

How often Santos starts is open to question.

For now though, the Brazilian has been pretty effective screening Manchester United’s defence, in the manner Casemiro used to do.

Santos might not have the same game intelligence as his illustrious fellow countryman just yet. But he makes up for that with his extra running.

Delighted to see Rashford back in the squad. Had a great season at Barca and helped England reach the semis. Looking forward to seeing his creative spark help us push for the title this year.

  6. Postpublished at 11:40 BST

Hull v Man Utd (12:30 BST)

Manchester United were very much the third-best side in the Premier League last season, not just in terms of points but goal difference and expected goal difference too.

Only Arsenal and Manchester City scored more goals and United fans will deem it fitting that their team took the most shots in the league, although 10 teams created better chances on average.

At the back, five teams conceded fewer goals and again it was the quality of the chances that mattered. Eight sides let in a lower percentage of their opponents' shots but that is because eight sides gave up chances that were harder to score on average. Senne Lammens was actually the best shotstopper in the league, preventing more goals than any other keeper based on the quality of chances he faced (6.5).

As a result, United scored and conceded goals at around the same rate last season - something they are likely to need to change if they are to challenge for the title.

Hull City last played Manchester United at home in January 2017.

It was memorable for being one of only six Hull victories over their storied opponents in their entire history – their previous one was in 1974.

Michael Carrick was in the Manchester United side for the 2-1 EFL Cup semi-final second leg loss. But only one player who started that day is featuring this afternoon.

Harry Maguire was 23 and in what turned out to be his final season for the Tigers before he moved to Leicester.

Jarrod Bowen and Andy Robertson were two other notable members of the Hull squad.

Jose Mourinho’s side edged through to Wembley 3-2 on aggregate. Luke Shaw was on the bench.

  8. What are the new rules for the new Premier League season?published at 11:35 BST

The 2026-27 season will feature an unprecedented number of new laws, mostly designed to tackle tempo disruption and make the game quicker.

The idea is to cut out those moments which cause supporters real frustration, and get more football played without adding on loads of stoppage time.

The changes are intended to change player behaviour, rather than be applied as a strict punishment.

    The new rules include:

    • Countdowns for goal-kicks and throw-ins
    • Time-limited substitutions
    • Injured players must now go off for one minute
    • No more goalkeeper tactical timeouts?
    • Handling the ball in the area
    • More VAR

You can read a full breakdown of the rule changes from BBC Sport's football issues correspondent Dale Johnson here.

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic has delivered a return to the Premier League few at the club expected at the start of last season.

The Tigers have been given a mouthwatering first game back, as Jakirovic acknowledges in his programme notes: "Manchester United are a very dangerous but exciting opponent for our first game back.

"When I was younger, I enjoyed watching Sir Alex Ferguson's team of the 1990s with Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole - they were a formidable side.

"Michael Carrick has brought back some of the old DNA of Manchester United and understands what the club means to the fans from his time there as a player."

Hull City's owner on the journey that's taken him and the club to the Premier League.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali is preparing for the club's return to the Premier League, the latest milestone in a life that has taken him from bankruptcy and personal tragedy to television stardom.

Dubbed Turkey's Simon Cowell, Ilicali has become one of the most recognisable figures in his home country, a rise that might once have seemed unlikely after he was declared bankrupt in his twenties.

Now, as Hull prepare for their first season back in the top flight since he bought the club in 2022, he says he is approaching the challenge with the same determination that has defined much of his life.

"If you'd given me eight years, I'd say we can do it. In four and a half years, to get promotion, I can say it's my biggest achievement in business," Ilicali said.

    Chris Collinson

Hull City defied history and statistics in the Championship last season by not only becoming the first sixth-placed side to be promoted to the Premier League since Blackpool in 2010, but doing so despite having the second-worst expected goal difference in the league.

Despite only four teams taking fewer shots, only four scored more goals than Sergej Jakirovic's side as they had the best shot-conversion rate in the league.

This was partly because only two sides created better chances on average, although they still scored 10 more goals than expected even taking that into account.

The fact that Hull got promoted with one of the worst defences is even more remarkable, as only three sides conceded more goals.

On top of that, the Tigers actually conceded 14 fewer goals than expected given the number and quality of shots they faced, with only two teams giving up more shots and only bottom side Sheffield Wednesday having a worse defence in terms of xG.

Such an incredible achievement means Hull City have a fight on their hands to not become the victims of their own success this season.

Manchester United staff were quick to stress in Poland last week that Marcus Rashford's number nine shirt should not be regarded as permanent.

It fueled more speculation the England forward might leave before the transfer window closes, even though it is not anticipated that will happen.

Presumably Manchester United are responsible for letting Hull know what numbers to assign their players in the match programme - and Rashford doesn't have one.

However, the club have now confirmed Rashford will wear the number nine shirt in 2026-27.

  17. 'They should begin with a win'published at 11:05 BST

Hull v Man Utd (12:30 BST)

    .

Hull City's assistant head coach Dean Holden came on the Monday Night Club this week and spoke really well about how they will approach the Premier League. It sounds like they will be horrible to play against, and will be happy to go direct when they have to.

With them starting at home, getting a result against Manchester United - who Holden is a big fan of - could really make their season.

I think they will be competitive, but my worry for Hull is from looking at how they did last year, when they lost a third of their games in the Championship.

As a story, Sergej Jakirovic getting them from 21st place into the play-offs, and then up, is remarkable. Now they just need to hang on in there in the Premier League, but that will be very difficult.

United have not done much in the transfer market this summer, but Youri Tielemans is a really good signing - a safe signing, if there is such a thing - like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were last year.

As things stand, they are going to be stretched by being in the Champions League and I do feel like Carrick overachieved by getting them there.

Now the expectations are rising following their third-place finish, but they are nowhere near Arsenal at the moment.

I think them having European football, while Tottenham and Chelsea don't, will have a huge bearing on the season, which is why I left United out of my top four.

They should begin with a win, but this is the start of a full-on campaign for them, which makes it far more difficult, and they will need to add to their squad.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2
