Earlier tonight everyone was talking about Mbappe breaking the goals record, it seems people forgot about Messi. My money is definitely on Messi

Almost World Cup history right there. Lionel Messi, at the age of 38, is too fast for his marker and shoots at goal, but Luca Zidane redeems himself a bit after that error for the second goal.

Zidane springs up and gets a strong hand to push the ball over the top.

I don't know if that took a deflection, but if it didn't that is really poor goalkeeping from Zidane.

There has been a bit of a burst from Argentina, Alexis Mac Allister hits it hard and low. It comes right to the goalkeeper, he bundles it away and right in to the middle of the goal and Messi calmy controls it in to the corner.

  10. goal

GOAL - Argentina 2-0 Algeriapublished at 60 mins

    Lionel Messi

World Cup goal number 15 for Lionel Messi.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister strikes hard and low from 25 yards out, but Luca Zidane - the son of France World Cup winner Zinedine - in the Algeria goal makes a real mess of it.

The ball bounces off his chest and it drops perfectly for Messi, who slots the ball into the net with his less-favoured right foot.

One more goal for Messi would make him the joint top World Cup goalscorer of all time.

  11. 'Argentina haven't really attacked with much purpose'published at 03:23 BST

I thought Martinez was OK. When the ball came his way he was competent and his last shot was a good bit of movement and a decent attempt on goal.

Argentina haven't really attacked with much purpose for the majority of the game. If you don't, the strikers get frustrated. Can it be different for Alvarez?

  12. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 58 mins

    Argentina 1-0 Algeria

Two more Atletico Madrid players come on to the pitch for Argentina as Nico Gonzalez and ex-Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez are on, with Thiago Almada and Lautaro Martinez off.

    Argentina 1-0 Algeria

You get the feeling another goal for Argentina would be enough for the three points and Lionel Messi slides a pass through to Lautaro Martinez, and he hits it across goal.

But Luca Zidane does well to get a hand to it.

  14. CLOSE!published at 52 mins

    Argentina 1-0 Algeria

Lionel Messi has already scored once and is close to another one. He gets 20 yards out and curls left footed. It is not far from nestling in the top corner, which whizzes just over the top.

The TV cameras focus on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is normally the star attraction at this stadium, winning American football's Super Bowl on three occasions for the Chiefs.

Mahomes, like everyone else in the stadium, is relishing watching Messi in action.

We need a bit more pace to the Algerian game. They have not asked enough questions of what is apparently the weakest part of Argentina, their defensive stability.

Argentina have become the first South American side to take the lead at this World Cup.

Messi is 39 next week, but wow he is up for it. He really wants this one. They kept him in cotton wool during the warm up games, but he is moving much more and doing much more than maybe we would have expected. He wants to leave the scene on a high.

  20. 'Not a lot between the teams'published at 02:57 BST

The difference in the teams has been Messi, there hasn't been a lot between them.

Neither side has had control of the game or made countless chances. Algeria will still feel the game is there for them.
