Arsenal returned to Emirates Stadium for the first time since they were crowned Premier League champions but were defeated 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup.

Samuele Inacio opened the scoring with a neat finish before Konstantino Karetsas curled in an excellent second.

Substitute Ethan Nwaneri pulled one back for Arsenal after some good work from Christos Tzolis.

Joane Gadou scored a third for Dortmund following a corner before Viktor Gyokeres scored Arsenal's second from the penalty spot after Tzolis was fouled.

Both teams had agreed to practice penalties after the match regardless of the result. Arsenal won the shootout with Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Piero Hincapie, Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri all scoring.

So how did the Arsenal players rate?

Kepa Arrizabalaga: There wasn't anything the second choice goalkeeper could do about either goal he conceded before he was substituted at half-time. 6

Ben White: The England international has looked fit and sharp this pre-season. He was the best performer of the Arsenal back four during his time on the pitch. 7

Cristhian Mosquera: Inacio ran off the back of the centre-back when he scored to give Dortmund the lead. 5

Gabriel Magalhaes: The centre-back's first start of pre-season after returning from the World Cup. Vocal as always but missed a good header in the first half when he and Kai Havertz went for the same ball. Given a yellow card for a foul on Karetsas. 6

Riccardo Calafiori: The left-back is so important to how Arsenal attack but Calafiori was caught on the ball high up the pitch and punished as Karetsas curled in an excellent second goal for the visitors. 6

Myles Lewis-Skelly: The 19-year-old has had a good pre-season but this was not his best game. 6

Martin Odegaard: The captain's first minutes of pre-season since returning from the World Cup. A couple of bright moments and one good pass to release Kai Havertz in the first half. Taken off after 30 minutes. 7

Kai Havertz: The German international was played in midfield again but didn't get on the ball much. Havertz had a good chance from a header. 5

Max Dowman: The 16-year-old grew into the game and showed his quality when on the ball. The winger beat his full-back and teed up Gyokeres in the first half, but the forward's effort clipped the crossbar. 6

Christos Tzolis: A couple of good deliveries into the area from set-pieces and assisted Nwaneri's goal. 7

Viktor Gyokeres: The forward showed lots of effort and energy but lacked quality throughout the match. Gyokeres hit the crossbar from inside the box in the first half but rolled in a penalty in the second. 6

Ethan Nwaneri: Brought on after 30 minutes to replace Odegaard. The 19-year-old scored in the second half to bring Arsenal back into the match. The midfielder forced the Dortmund keeper into a good save in the second half, too. 7

Illan Meslier: Came on at half-time as Mikel Arteta rotated his goalkeepers. Meslier made a good save but unfortunately the rebound was put in for Borussia Dortmund's third. 6

Piero Hincapie: The defender was introduced at the hour mark as he continues to build up his minutes during pre-season. 7

Marli Salmon: The 16-year-old was brought on at centre-back, which shows how highly rated he is by those at the club. He won one impressive header and made a couple of good tackles, which brought cheers from the crowd. 7

Gabriel Martinelli: The winger was brought on as one of seven late changes but with the flow of the game broken he did not have chance to impact the game. 6

Gabriel Jesus: Minimal touches for the forward when he came on. 5

Fabio Vieira: The midfielder was barley involved as the game became disrupted with the changes. 5

Ife Ibrahim: The highly rated youngster always looked to get on the ball where possible. 6

Theo Julienne: The 18-year-old came on at right-back and put in an enthusiastic performance in the closing minutes of the game. 6

Josh Ogunnaike: Brough on at left-back and saw quite a lot of the ball. 6

Ceadach O'Neill: Came on and tried to add energy to the midfield as the game drifted to the finish. 6
