Not many forwards in world football have had a better start to their season than Southampton's Cyle Larin.

The Canada striker is the leading goalscorer in the Championship and has netted more than anyone in Europe's top five leagues.

But after a nomadic career that has taken in spells in the United States, Turkey, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands, why has Larin been so prolific for the south coast side?

Whilst most headlines previewing this game will cite Wrexham’s high-profile owners poking fun at the Spygate scandal, the Welsh club won’t let ‘banter’ with the opposition cloud what is also a sombre day for the local community.

Today is the 92nd anniversary of the Gresford Colliery Disaster - 266 men lost their lives on 22 September 1934 following an explosion in the mine.

The club state there were more men underground than normal, as many were working double shifts in order to watch Wrexham play Tranmere later in the day.

The names of all 266 victims are stated in the matchday programme. There will be a minute’s silence to remember them before kick-off.

Southampton's Spygate scandal has already caused more than a few jibes and Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have been more than happy to get in on the action.

The latter is one of the creators of successful, long-running US comedy show 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' and Reynolds is perhaps best known for his role as the sarcastic superhero Deadpool so it's no surprise the two took to social media to poke fun at their next opponents while promoting sponsor Firefox.

But, based on recent form, it could be the Saints who have the last laugh.

Southampton are just short of the play-offs as it stands but without their four-point deduction - punishment for the aforementioned scandal - at the start of the season, would be comfortably competing for the automatic promotion places.

Wrexham, meanwhile, are lingering not far above the relegation places and are coming off a humiliating 6-0 loss to West Ham United.

Two of the division's bottom three meet at unhappy Turf Moor.

Burnley, relegated from the Premier League last season, have failed to win any of their seven league games this season and, going back to 2025-26, are without a victory in 19 league matches now.

Veteran defender Kyle Walker said he has "never wanted a victory as much" as he wants one today.

If the Clarets don't get the three points then boss Nicky Hayen might not still be in charge when they return to league action in three weeks.

Derby boss John Eustace is also not sitting too comfortably just now, with his side having lost their past three games.

The Rams have failed to win on their past nine league visits to this corner of Lancashire.

The outcome of this meeting at Fratton Park today will perhaps shape how the supporters of Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers rate their respective beginnings to the new campaign.

Win and there will be optimism about what might be achievable this term; lose and there will be early glances over the shoulder towards the foot of the table.

Separated only by 17th-placed Watford, who lost on Friday night, Pompey and Rovers have each posted a couple of wins so far - Tony Mowbray's side in particular picked up an impressive win over Millwall last time out.

John Mousinho's Pompey have kept successive clean sheets after a leaky start, including at early-season fliers Charlton Athletic.

There is room for improvement, however, on both fronts and each side will be eager to sign off before this hefty international lay-off with a sense of satisfaction - something which can be achieved with a win here.

Two sides with the best defensive records in the Championship clash here and both play some great football.

After six decades away from the second tier Lincoln City have settled in well on their return to the Championship. They face a Swansea City side who are sitting second in the table just behind leaders West Ham United and Vitor Matos side have been very impressive so far with only one defeat in their seven games.

This will be a real test for the visitors at a ground where the Imps excelled in League One last season and generally make it very tough. Freddie Draper and Rob Street could be key for the home side whilst Adam Idah and last season's Championship top scorer Zan Vipotnik will potentially hold the key to any Swans success.

It has the hallmarks of being a real cracker of a tie, let's see if those backlines can hold firm or are we set for a goal fest this afternoon.

A win at Lincoln this afternoon would put Swansea City on 17 points from their opening eight games - matching their best start to a league season in 21 years.

It would equal the return from the Covid-disrupted 2019-20 campaign under Steve Cooper.

Victory today would also surpass the six wins from eight managed by the late Kenny Jackett's side in League One in 2005-06.

While a flying start signals serious intent, fans will be hoping for a different twist under Vitor Matos, as both those campaigns ended in play-off defeats.

As for Lincoln, they return to the comforts of home following a fruitful away-day double header, having edged out both Preston North End and Bristol City since last playing in front of their own supporters.

Considered by many to be relegation candidates before a ball was even kicked, the Imps - under the dual management of Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw - have gone five unbeaten and currently sit on the edge of the play-offs, having shown signs they are quickly getting to grips with this level.

Two teams who have lost just one of their opening seven league games meet in the second city with the home side looking to put an end to a recent bad run against today's visitors.

Birmingham have lost all of their past seven league games against Middlesbrough and Boro have won seven of their past eight visits to St Andrew's.

Chris Davies' side have drawn all three of their home games so far this campaign.

Middlesbrough came back from 2-0 down to take a point in a 2-2 draw with Millwall in midweek and no side has taken more than their seven points from losing positions in the Championship this season.

Preston North End's Paul Heckingbottom became the first Championship managerial casualty when he was sacked on Sunday and now the Lilywhites have to endure one last tough test before they get the international break to gather their thoughts.

They make the trip to the capital to a Queens Park Rangers side that have had a solid start to their campaign, losing just one league match so far and that by a single goal from Middlesbrough marksman Will Lankshear.

Preston, meanwhile, have lost all but one and first-team coach Jason Euell has been tasked with ensuring they don't suffer another. But it's pressure the former Jamaica forward welcomes.

"All eyes are on me as the man at the front but I've got no issue with that," Euell said.

"I've got big shoulders. It's not like I've not led a team before - yes, it's at a different level, a different stake.

"I'm looking forward to the weekend in a way of putting things right that haven't been good."

Right then, three down, six games to come... Shall we?

A well deserved first win of the Championship season for the Bluebirds, their first in 16 attempts spanning two seasons.

Jack Moylan was the architect of all that Cardiff did well today; he opened the scoring when receiving the ball back from Yousef Salech, and then he turned provider for Cardiff's target man to double the lead.

Tyreece Campbell did pull one back for Charlton, who can have no complaints about the result over the course of the piece and actually had Arthur Okonkwo to thank for keeping the hosts at bay for extended periods.

Moylan netted his second and Cardiff's third, which killed the game, in the second half - it was a beauty, too, in off the post.

I thought Millwall were outstanding in the first half and moments of the second.

West Ham did enough to come back, I don't think they deserved the 2-2 but they got it.

A great game between these two today, everything we expected.

What has otherwise been a near perfect day for Cardiff now has a worrying footnote.

While challenging in the penalty area, Yousef Salech went down clutching his shoulder.

Clearly in discomfort, he received treatment in the mouth of the goal with the match paused and, finally, has got to his feet but is using his shirt as a makeshift sling for his right arm as he makes his way off the field.

A belting East End derby of two halves.

A derby 14 years in the making has delivered, big time.

The home side led 2-0 at the break, with West Ham all over the shop.

However, they grew into it after the break and goals from sub Mohamadou Kante and Konstantinos Mavropanos had them level with 10 to play and they looked like they could win it.

However, Kante then saw red for pulling back Kyrell Lisbie as he burst in on goal and the 10 men were left to hold out for their draw.

West Ham stay top of the league but will they still be there at the end of the day?
