Watford upset title hopefuls Southampton in a superb display on both ends of the pitch under new boss Alessio Dionisi.

Zian Flemming is the hero as Burnley looked down and out against West Ham only to fight back in the closing stages.

Burnley

Burnley boss Nicky Hayen speaking to Sky Sports:

"I'm really pleased with the way that we showed resilience and came back in a game that actually we didn't deserve to lose, but then the team showed character to today and that's the most important thing.

"Of course when you play against a real strong team, they were really clinical and we weren't. But at the end we level up and it gives a feeling that we've won the game even if we have one point, but the way that we came back was really good and I'm really pleased for everyone from Burnley."

A little stat that might have Southampton fans feeling slightly better about their promotion chances.

There have been 18 instances where a team that's been promoted has lost their opening EFL match since the 2004-05 season.

Granted, it's not happened since Sheffield United did it in 2022-23.

Southampton

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert spoke to BBC Radio Solent:

"I think we had a very good start in the game. We made a mistake in possession, they scored off the first occasion and these games take a different dynamic," he said.

"The reaction was very positive, if you look at 90 minutes we didn’t get the result that we wanted - that’s clear - but there were more than enough moments to turn the game around.

"Overall a disappointing result today, but we now go on to three home games in a row and we need to make sure we pick up points."

Watford

Watford head coach Alessio Dionisi spoke to BBC Three Counties Radio after his side won 2-1 against Southampton in his first Championship game in charge:

"I am very happy. My team at the end was very tired because the match was difficult," he said.

"Southampton is very strong, for me they will arrive in first, second or third position [at the end of the season].

"I liked the mentality of my players, because in every moment I saw one team. They worked together without the ball and with the ball."

Remember Burnley and West Ham wasn't the only Championship game today.

While we wait more reaction from Turf Moor let's see what the managers had to say from Watford and Southampton about their match.

Burnley offered plenty of attacking threat today, even if they did let a lot of it fall to the wayside.

West Ham, meanwhile, were slightly more clinical but maybe a tad too passive against a team that, like them, were playing in the Premier League a few months ago.

Burnley

A little more from goal scorer and player of the match Zian Flemming speaking to Sky Sports:

"West Ham are probably the very clear favourite to win the league this year, so, it was an exciting start to host them at home and like we said before the game this can be a game where we can make a statement as a team.

"If they are the favourites then lets show them that we're going to be right up there as well and I think we've done that today even though we didn't get the win.

Burnley

Burnley's Zian Flemming scored both of his side's goals in the closing 10 minutes of the game to earn the Clarets a point, and he also missed a handful of other chances through the second-half.

He said his side deserved the point, maybe even more, speaking after full-time.

"We were quite good for the entire game, we conceded two goals which shouldn't happen but overall we probably deserved even more than a point if you see the chances we had, the chances I had," Flemming told Sky Sports.

"Myself and the lads have to do better at some, at some you have to be a little bit lucky or not unlucky.

"But we showed great persistance to keep going, to keep going and kept believing we were 2-0 down and we could score and come back in the game."

At 2-0 Burnley were dead and buried then they got a lifeline with the penalty.

Zian Flemming hits the post with the header and then sees one cleared off the line. It was always going to be him who was going to get the goal.

Great spirit from Burnley and credit to the manager for taking a gamble that he made and he probably got the reward for it.

It will look and feel like like a win, but there's lots to work on, to do better and the manager to look at.

A great game for the Championship for the start of the season.

Burnley fight back to draw with fellow relegated club West Ham.

It felt inevitable that the Hammers would go on to win after Manor Solomon fired in a second but no.

A naive error from young left-back Oliver Scarles gifted Burnley a penalty and Zian Flemming, after missing so many chances throughout the match, converted before finding another to level.

That second-half was so much better from the Clarets. They never stopped believing and now their fans might be feeling more hopeful about their chances this season too.
