Sadly for Manchester City supporters, it wasn’t just Pep Guardiola whose time at the club came to an end on Sunday afternoon.

Both John Stones and Bernardo Silva also played their final games for the club, with the duo set to leave the Etihad later this summer when their contracts expire.

Both players were integral signings for Guardiola at the start of his reign at City, especially Stones.

The England international was signed from Everton for a then eye-watering £47.5m in 2016. He initially struggled for consistency, but soon found his feet and went on to become one of the most successful defenders in the club’s history, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League and more.

Silva, meanwhile, made a seamless adaptation to life in English football after impressing Guardiola while playing in a Champions League tie for Monaco against City in the 2016/17 season, and has arguably been one of the best signings of his time at the club.

Silva has been such a reliable and consistent performer that he featured in 304 of a possible 342 Premier League matches during his nine seasons at City.

Both players started the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday and received guard of honours from both teams when they were substituted late in the second half.

I think Jamie and Pierre make a fair point. Pep Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City will be viewed very differently if the club are found guilty of the charges brought against them by the Premier League.

City, of course, deny any wrongdoing.

City players and supporters have experienced success like never before during Guardiola's tenure and there were few dry eyes around Etihad Stadium as the Spaniard called time on his reign.

Guardiola has claimed numerous records in his 10 years, such as the first 100-point haul by an English top-flight side and being the first team to win the title four times in a row.

Sunday afternoon provided one final opportunity to set another milestone as Guardiola went top of the list for most games in charge of City, surpassing Les McDowall's record between 1950 and 1963.

Although the team have won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season, their title challenge ended with Tuesday's draw at Bournemouth and their 15-game unbeaten run was brought to a halt by Villa.

Silva and Stones will also leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts following distinguished service and both players were given guards of honour when they were substituted in the second half.

Striker Erling Haaland was left out of the matchday squad, given a rest before heading to the World Cup with Norway, but ends the season with the Premier League's golden boot after scoring 27 goals.

Foden was unable to provide a final flourish, his goal chalked off for a slender offside, but the full-time whistle was nevertheless greeted with the home supporters serenading their legendary boss.

There wasn’t a dry eye at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon as Pep Guardiola said goodbye to Manchester City.

The 55-year-old has overseen an unprecedented period of success at the club since joining in 2016.

Guardiola has led City to 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph.

Last week, it was announced that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will join the City Football Group as an advisor, working across all of the club’s teams - including Manchester City - within their model.

Sunday afternoon marked the end of an era for several clubs up and down the Premier League.

From Pep Guardiola, John Stones and Bernardo Silva departing Manchester City to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson leaving Liverpool, it was an emotional day for many.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro and Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier also left their respective clubs ahead of moves to pastures new this summer.

On the managerial front, Andoni Iraola guided Bournemouth to European qualification for the first time in the club’s history in his final game in charge of the Cherries, while Marco Silva may also have overseen his final match as Fulham manager.

From Arsenal’s coronation to West Ham’s relegation - and everything else in between - the final day had it all.

On the other side of London, it was despair for West Ham as their 14-year stay in the Premier League came to an end despite beating Leeds at London Stadium.

The Hammers needed to win and hope that Tottenham lost against Everton to have any hope of retaining their top-flight status.

For a long while it looked like they would struggle to get the victory they needed as they put in a lethargic display in sweltering conditions, with their cause not helped by Spurs having taken a first-half lead against Everton.

But the moment the home fans had been waiting for came in the 67th minute when Taty Castellano headed in Jarrod Bowen's corner at the back post.

It got even better for the home side with 11 minutes remaining as they doubled their lead, Bowen driving a neat, angled finish into the far corner.

Substitute Callum Wilson added a third in stoppage time, and the Hammers had done their part but they still needed Everton to turn things around at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That outcome failed to materialise as Roberto De Zerbi's side held firm to win and retain their Premier League status.

Relegation means West Ham will play Championship football for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

And so, there it is.

The 2025/26 Premier League season has finally come to an end.

For some - particularly Arsenal and Sunderland fans - it was a historic season, and one they will never forget.

For others - Wolves, Burnley, West Ham, Liverpool and Chelsea - it was a campaign that never really managed to get going, and one that ultimately proved deeply disappointing.
