New Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Cesar Peixoto claimed a first victory in his first game in charge as the relegated Championship side comfortably saw off League Two Port Vale to reach the Carabao Cup second round.

Three first-half goals from Adam Armstrong, Andre and Fer Lopez proved enough and, although Jon Brady's Vale had their chances and missed a second-half penalty, Wolves were simply too good for the visitors.

Wolves had only one of their summer signings starting, former England right-back Kieran Trippier, but Mexican Raul Jimenez made a noisily acclaimed appearance from the bench after the break following his summer return from Fulham.

While Wolves now start their Championship campaign with another home Molineux date next Friday night against Tony Mowbray's Blackburn Rovers, Vale must remain on the road for their League Two season opener the next day at Oldham.

Young Portuguese starlet Mateus Mane helped set Wolves on their way on 14 minutes when his cross deflected into the path of Armstrong and the £7m former Blackburn Rovers, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion striker made no mistake.

Armstrong might quickly have had a second goal only to hit the post before Vale then wasted three decent chances to level, the most glaring of them from Jordan Gabriel, who stuck a toe out to make sure of guiding on-loan Wrexham man Mo Faal's goalbound header across the line, only to be distracted into fluffing it wide of the target.

Vale were then made to pay further when Wolves doubled their lead on 34 minutes with a well-worked set-piece as Yerson Mosquera nodded on for Andre to head only his second goal for the club.

And it was 3-0 by the break when Rodrigo Gomes helped set up a first goal for the club for £19m Spaniard Lopez.

Brady's men looked like they might get some reward for their truly valiant second-half efforts 11 minutes after the restart when Mosquera brought down Faal, but former West Brom striker Faal fired his penalty straight at Wolves keeper Daniel Bentley.

Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto told BBC Radio WM:

"I'm happy for sure. A first victory is important to bring confidence.

"A lot of things still to improve, that is normal. But we want to stay at a good level to start the season.

"We still need to bring in players that can improve the level of the team.

"I want things done as soon as possible but the market is delayed because of the World Cup."

Port Vale boss Jon Brady told BBC Radio Stoke:

"We had three big chances and then they score after that and it hits you hard.

"But I wanted us to be brave and we went after them. I was really pleased with some of our play.

"We're playing against a team who are expected to go straight back in to the Premiership.

"They're two levels above us – and yet in the second half we created more chances than they did."
